positive Anti SM & U1RNP with joint swelling and pain

by sumi_tharun, Nov 07, 2009 11:42AM
Hi ,
I have swelling and pain in my right knee joint for the past 2 years and in the left knee joint for the past 7 months .I have hypothyroidism and I am taking thyronorm 100 mcg for the past 5 months(we found out only then).
last week i had the DNA tests done and I have :
ANA - IFA - positive(dil - 1 : 1000)
Anti SM    - positive(dil - 1 :10,000)
U1 RNP    - positive(dil - 1 : 10,000)
ESR     - 17mm/hr
Anti ccp: negative.
Except these I dont have any of the problems of lupus  like photosensitivity, rashes, no  renal and neurological disorder, no anaemia, no abnormal RBC WBC counts...etc but my hair falls a lot(??? might be due to breast feeding my 9 month old baby or hypothyroidism???). My doc suggests that I have a mixed connectivity disease (SLE with RA) and wants me to start with 60 mg omnacortil. Do I really have lupus ? Should I start the medications and follow his advise. Kindly help me...

It is my understanding that the Smith antibodies (anti-sm) are only seen in lupus and there really isn't such thing as a false positive for it.

I also tested positive for anti-sm and am pretty close to my lupus diagnosis which will probably also involve some other overlapping conditions based on my symptoms.  Looking at you blood work alone... looks like lupus, but I am not a doctor!  Although you may have lupus, it looks like you may one of the lucky ones who have a very mild disease.
