As Jackie says, doxy alone will not cure lyme once past the initial stage. You do need an expert to prescribe the right combo for your symptoms and co-infections to give you the best chance of recovery.
According to Burrascano (ILADS lyme treatment guidelines) doxy wil hold the level of lyme infection stable, but not reduce it, once in the disseminated phase.
My doc uses clarithromycin and cefuroxim together on little kids, only because they cannot take the better/more effective antibiotics. ASo it does work, but not alone, and not as well as other choices.
Do get yourself to the ophthalmologist as a matter or urgency. Some of the eye problems Lyme causes are irreversible, so phone the ophthalmologist's receptionist, explain teh severity of your problems mentioning Lyme disease, and ask if you could possibly be slotted in as a matter of urgency.
I'd suggest you call the ophthalmologist (not an optometrist or an optician) and tell them your symptoms and ask to be put on their cancellation list. Youve is right, ophthalmologists take Lyme seriously. Mine sure did.
Which drugs for Lyme depend on how long you've been infected and what other infections the tick(s) may have given you ... which happens about 50% of the time, so they estimate. If you are not just recent infected, doxy alone will not do the trick, and clarithromycin may well not either. There are reasons for this that have to do with the bacteria finding ways to hide in your body where these regular meds can't find them. That's the stuff an LLMD knows.
Keep trying with the docs -- best wishes -- keep us posted!
Nope working on getting records still. I have been having eye issues BIG time. I get blurry vision and double vision ALOT! Its terrible and I do have referral to opthamologist that i got a few months ago from fam dr. Thanks for your suggestions guys! So y'all find Doxy to work better than Clarithromycin? I have been having skin issues so maybe I can even get the doxy from my fam dr! Thanks you guys! U r the best!
unfortunately the infectious disease doc will not believe you either. Do you have your blood test results? can u scan and send them? A lot of Drs do not even read the test correctly.
I had lesions on my body from the co-infection, Bartonella so my Tx doctor gave me doxy for my skin problem which was enough until I got to Fl and saw my LLMD .
Youvegottobekidding you are right, when I first went to the eye Doc he mentioned giving me abx but since I was on them already chose drops instead.
Some rheumatologists prescribe antibiotics for joint problems, so if you have those, that could be a route.
Opthalmologists presceibe antibiotic for long periods if you have lyme disease eye problems - they are uysually the only medical professionals you can pretty much rely on to take lyme seriously since it can make you go blind. So if you do have eye problems, get off to an ophthalmologist.
As a last resort. a rather ridiculous one, I do know someone who managed to give herself acne (putting butter on her face) and cry about it to get long term doxycycline. It's too low a dose to ever cure you but it can hold things at bay till you get to see a useful doctor.
