I've had a life-long struggle with weight, obese as a child, eating disorder as a teen, obese as an adult.
Before I was diagnosed, I was doing all I could to improve my health and I'd lost over 40 lbs. Once I stated abx, it was all I could do not to gain weight and after a year of frustration (counting every calorie as exercising through fatigue and pain), I gave up and gained most of the weight back.
Around when I stopped abx I was dx with a massive fibroid tumor that was draining my energy and also making weight loss/management extremely tough. I had surgery to remove it in august 2012.
Last year, off abx and done with the fibroid, I finally got on thyroid treatment, though I'm only considered "sub clinical" hypo, and I again lost 40 lbs, this time in only about 4 months. But now I've gained a lot of that back due to pregnancy.
It is roller coaster for sure though I take some comfort to think that the abx made the already hard job of weight loss/management even harder!
I gained weight almost immediately when I started Biaxin WAAAY back in the beginning. I think that was the first of many antibiotics i took over the years. I'm almost 100% positive that was the culprit because I ordered some new jeans and pants, going by what I had always worn. By the time those jeans got delivered I'd put on enough weight that I could barely fit in them. And it's just gone uphill since then.
My thyroid is being treated adequately. But I'm also on other meds (now) that I wasn't on then (HBP and Coumadin and others) that have weight gain as a side effect.
I also got tested for leptin a few years later (a hormone) and am off the charts on that. (There's no agreed upon treatment for that).
So, no wonder I'm a blimp.:(
I have definitely gained weight, but I'm not sure it can be attributed solely to the abx, because I am and have been on so many different meds, it's hard to say which might actually be responsible. I also have hypothyroidism which isn't being treated adequately yet, so losing the weight has been a challenge. But this information is interesting and definitely provides food for thought.
I gained weight when I fist started treatment on abx but mine was solved as soon as I found out I was hypothyroid and had that problem fixed.
