Lyme Disease and low platelet count

by laydeejoey, Aug 28, 2008 07:46PM
I contracted Lyme's Disease in June of 2007, also while undergoing treatments (Interferon for melanoma).  I developed the bull's eye but symptoms were hard to diagnose, as they were very similar to the symptoms I was experiencing due to interferon.  It is very possible and very likely that I was bitten by a deer tick previous to June of 2007 but was not aware of Lyme's at the time.  I was treated with doxycycline for 2 weeks for the Lyme Disease.

All during my cancer treatments, my platelet count was low (106, 110) but since the beginning of the year, it was gotten lower.  I was tested last week and my count was 58.  I just had a bone marrow biopsy to see if there is a possibility of bone cancer, etc. and await the results.  I experience terrible fatigue, bone and joint pain.

It low platelets a possible side effect of Lyme Disease if the disease is not treated long enough?  Also, could the low platelet count be a residual from having Lyme Disease prior to June of 2007 and not being treated?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Hi there....

Sorry about the health concerns.
Did you test positive for Lyme's? and have you been tested further?

About the platelets...from the little I do know, the interferon can do some odd things and that includes messing with bones, joints, marrow, organs,.....So blood chemistry can be affected.
Wishing the best for you. It's so difficult too when there's more than one problem to deal with.
A friend of mine has chronic Lyme...nothing gets rid of it, the bacterias.
So now she is dealing with multitudes of illnesses...from a tick bite.
