Pet with Lyme Disease

by sick and tired 47, Aug 05, 2009 04:59PM
Hi All! I just thought I would pass along that pets can get Lyme disease too.
My sister called me today and told me her dog has lyme disease. He has been very lethargic, not his spunky schnauzer self, then he seemed stiff, trouble walking, jumping. He also had shaking, muscle spasms. She took him to the vet and he was positive for lyme disease. He is on Doxycycline for 30 days, then will retest for the lyme.
She said he looks and seems to feel terrible.... vet gave her pain pills for him too.
Interesting..... people get brushed off, .....
At least the poor animals who have no voice get treated!!
Best wishes and healing to all!

My vet told me that it is pretty easy to spot lyme in a dog due to the stiffness and the way they walk.  He said it is a characteristic gait.  Yes they get quicker and better treatment.  The testing is supposedly reliable for dogs.

Good post.

Vets know a lot more about Lyme -- and have much more respect for its power -- than most MDs.

It's one of the squirrely things about this disease.

btw, ticks-on-dogs can hop over and be ticks-on-people ... and bring Lyme+ along with them, as far as I know.
