Lymphedema development 2 years out from bilateral mastectomy

I have just recently in the past month developed some painful sensations of my left arm and hand, the side that had the carcinoma in situ... I did not have any chemo or radiation following the surgery as 5/5 lymph nodes were free of metastasis and the final pathology was carcinoma in situ without invasive spread into surrounding breast tissue, and my surgeon felt that I did not need further therapy.  I chose to have  bilateral mastectomies to avoid having to potentially go through a second surgery at a later date.  Tonight I noticed my hand and lower arm was swollen. My question is, why am I developing this lymphedema now, so far out from the surgery., and how serious is this development.  My arm isn't huge, but I cannot wear my normal watch, and the sleeves on my shirts are tight.  I have been massaging up under my armpits over the last week or so, which seems to have been helping  the soreness that extends all the way down to my hand, and tonight after noticing the swelling, I've been  trying to keep my arm held up over my head as much as possible.   I am also going to consult my family doctor  about this so she can recommend any further therapy, though on her website, the soonest appointment is next Tuesday.. Do you think waiting a week is safe in this case?    Thanks much for your response.

You need to request an appointment with a Physical Therapist ASAP ..... one who has been trained in the treatment of Lymphedema ! Once the lymphatic system has been comprimised by the surgery you had you are at risk for the rest of your life when it comes to Lymphedema. The sooner the treatment is begun the sooner your condition can be controlled. It will only get worse so please get that appointment very soon. If I were you I would call your Dr.s office and ask for a referral to the Physical Therapist .... don't waste any time getting started with treatment.     Regards ....
