how many ounces of solids a day?

how many ounces of solids a day?

Hi -
Hayden is doing great but the feeding is always such a process! During the 2Xs a day when she gets solids - lunch and dinner - she ends up eating her bib, chomping the spoon, putting food in her hair. I feed her green beans, peas, sweet potato, pears, applesauce, bananas, etc....sometimes she will take half of the 2 oz container, sometimes all of it, sometimes two bites. She does about 25-30 ounces of formula a day and Dr says at this age majority of nutrition from formula and not to worry too much about the solids.

Where is everyone else at? Hayden will be 7 mons on Oct 16, and has one tooth.

Let's see. Jack will be 7 months on the 12th. His attention span makes some feedings very difficult. He does good for the most part but man if he gets his hands on some food it seems to go everywhere. I think I am pertepually wiping his mouth and hands during our feedings. He hates the wet towel but if I didn't do it every few minutes I would have food on the ceiling. :) The thing I hate the most is when he starts to eat the straps of his highchair. He gets little food particles on the strap and makes everything sticky...yuck.

Right now we are eating the following:

Apples
Pears
Bananas
Mangos
Peas
Carrots
Swet Potatos
Winter Squash
Avacado
Peaches (didn't set well and gave him diaper rash so I am waiting a few weeks to try is again).

I think that is about all the foods we have gone thru so far. It has been a slow progression.

Here is our routine:

7:30a - 9oz bottle
10:30a - 4oz jar of food mixed with 2 tblspns of rice cereal.
11:30a - 8oz bottle
2:30p - 4oz jar of food
3:30p - 8oz bottle
6:30p - 4oz jar of food mixed with 2 tblspns of rice cereal
7:30p - 9oz bottle

Sometimes the jar of food might be interchanged with some homemade food but this is our approximate schedule.

All in all Jack eats 34oz of formula per day and 12oz of solids and 4tblspns of rice cereal. Oh and he is practicing his sippy cup drinking. He is drinking about a cup or so of water [I am against juice at this point] each day. He takes a few swigs at each solid feeding.

I bet if I would give him more food he would just keep eating. I think now that he is semi-mobile his calorie requirement has changed a bit. This kid is going to eat us out of house and home soon. ;)

Sounds like Hayden is doing just great with her intake. I guess setting 30 minutes aside for each solid feeding is not too crazy. :)

Phin is eating 4-6 ounces of solids a day. I make his food and so far he gets sweet potato, butternut squash, avocado, peas, peaches and tomorrow we are trying plums. He really does not like fruits and so far peaches are the only he will tolerate. I mix everything with a bit of oatmeal and a splash of prune juice.

He stil nurses on demand and gets one 7-8 ounce bottle of breastmilk at night with Daddy.

Irish- wow Jack eats a lot! Does he always finish his bottles?? I can barely get Blake to finish her 8 oz bottles, sometimes leaving 2 or 3 oz which concerns me because she is on the low end of the formula ounces a day.

Blake has JUST started to become a pain while feeding. She absolutely has to get to spoon from me and she makes a mess. :( I just try to get as much in there as possible before she throws a tantrum to do it herself. Any tips on how to distract them from the spoon???

Mark never stops eating.... it is crazy. He eats anywhere from 6- 8 oz of food a day- all mixed with oatmeal as Mark likes his food thick. Also he loves to feed himself pieces of food that I have cut up for him. Like Phin, Mark drinks breastmilk on demand.

Foods he eats are: Rutabaga, carrots, peas, green beans, parsnip, cantalope, watermelon, peaches, apples, avocado, sweet potatoes, beef, banana, blueberries, mango, papaya, spinach, chard, broccoli, graham crackers, gerber puffs (the puffs and wheels), tofu. He LOVES ham fried rice as well. I do make all of his food myself and he likes most of his food with chunks in it.

Amy - Yep he finishes everything without pause. Sometimes I wonder if I am feeding him enough because he can be so ravenous sometimes. I am not extremely worried yet, but I think I will bring it up at his 9 month appointment.

Oh and I meant Jack is eating oatmeal mixed in his food not rice cereal...that stuff is yucky. ;)

Whitneylauren - You mentioned Mark is eating beef. Is this from a jar or "homemade"? If it is homemade how are you chopping/pureeing it up? I have a few jars that have turkey or some meat product in them but have not yet tried them. I wasn't sure when they can be introduced. I think I read it can be around this time but wanted to get thru a few more fruits/veggies first.

Irish- the jarred meat is gross...my cats won't even eat it, so i went to the work to make Carter some Turkey because i had a tukey breast that need to be used, pureed it all up...and he gags on it, and it still is gross but not quite as bad as jarred

Carter eats (times are approximate and sometimes an extra 4 oz bottle or two)
7am- 2 cubes (i make all food and freeze in ice cube trays) plus 2 Tbsp cereal (varies between rice, barley and oatmeal) plus 8oz bolttle
10:30 4-6 oz water with splash of prune juice
12:30 2 cubes and 6-8oz bottle
4:30 2 cubes and 6oz bottle
7:30 6-8oz bottle

the foods I have made him so far are pears, peaches, watermelon, mango, beans, zuchanni, sweet potato, amber squash oh and the turkey...
He gets mostly fruit because of his constipation probelm and the veggies always stop him up

Oh and Carter has NO interest in self feeding he sits in his highchair and spreads his arms wide open. he will not take the spoon and he won't drink from a sippy cup...but he will drink from my neighbors coffe cup or my water bottle

Irish-
For the meats I just puree up what we are eating that night. With all the spices in it the meat is tastier for the little one to eat. It is what my baby cookbook says to do.
I don't puree a bunch and freeze it as I do fruits and veggies. Last night we at Spaghetti squash with spicy meat sauce. I just pureed up a portion of the whole thing and gave it to him to eat. He loved it.

Leighton doesn't have a large appetite either Jill... so no worries!

7am- 6oz. bottle
9am- 2 tbsp. fruit w/ 2 tbsp. oatmeal, then 1 oz. of apple juice mixed w/ 2oz. of water (from her sippy cup)
12pm- 6-7 oz. bottle
2pm- 1 cube of a veggie w/ 1 tbsp. oatmeal
4pm- 6 oz. bottle
6pm- 1 cube of a veggie w/ 1 tbsp. oatmeal & 1 cube of a fruit
7pm- 6 oz. bottle

How many ounces of solids that is, I am not sure.  But, Hayden and Leighton don't seem to be big eaters!  haha

As far as playing, she is pretty good about it.  But, I am sure it isn't fun to clean up!
