I want to hit my pediatrician

I want to hit my pediatrician

ok so my twins have severe acid reflux diagnosed by the Dr last Tuesday diagnose by mom 2 1/2 months ago I had to throw a fit for him to check into it more but I could tell my babies were in pain.....Mekaila's been on enfamil AR since like 2 weeks old when I was supplimenting with my breast milk we put her on that cause everything else she would throw up.....ok well Jacob was on gentlease and was just put on the AR Tuesday cause of the results from the upper GI well he also put them on zantac 3 x a day well I just called him and told him they are throwing up more and seem to be having more acid reflux problems you can tell that's what's happening they just scream in pain so I called my ped. to ask about putting them on prevacid instead cause it seems worse.....but he tells me it has to do with  the way i'm feeding them he told me last Tuesday I was feeding them ok Mekaila eat 5 oz at at time every 3 hours or so and Jacob eats 6 oz about every 3 hours and he said that was good now it's not WTF????  So he said just add more cereal to their bottle and that will help....they didn't throw up this bad before the meds so obviously that's not to do with how I'm feeding them...and I keep them sitting up 30-45 minutes..I'm so getting a new DR

5 and 6 ounces of formula every 3 hours sounds like a lot of formula to me.  Overfeeding could be part of the problem.

I hope you find a new doctor soon.  Good luck.

well that's what he said they needed and that's what they've been eating for quite a while and he said that was good for their weight and everyone I talk to that has babies their age says they are eating about that much.....and plus the thing is that's how much they've been eating and they weren't throwing up this much til the med...but he won't listen

both of my girls have reflux, however my pedi opted no meds put them on the enfamil AR and gave me tips etc.. on how to help, I have to feed them smaller amounts more frequently, which seems to help alot.,also I know you have the podees, I only use them if going out,are you using them alot?? and what nipples are you using I just went to a level 2 Ayla is doing good with it, however it was a litle to much for myleigh so we went back to the ones, I am suprised your pedi told you to give cereal in the bottle, Mine said no way, they are way to young, and the enfamil AR is thicker so it should help with feeling fuller, hope things work out soon for ya

I haven't been using the podees they still aren't good enough suckers yet.....and we are using the AR for both of them and have been with Mekaila since she was like 2 weeks we just switched to a level two now and are using strickly the Dr Browns now they can get something out they level 1 they always would clog....yeah I didn't think it was a good idea to add more cereal to the formula since they are already on the AR.....how much are you feeding and how ofter maybe I should break down feedings to more often.....

My daughter has reflux and the dr. told me not to feed them to much in one feeding... 5 ounces every 3 hours is too much formula.. the dr recommended me feeding Aubree 3-4 ounces every 4 hours and only 6 feedings a day!  Aubree is on Zantac as well and you have to give it a full month before you will start to see changes... it takes that long to work ( thats what my ped said) and she is also on the AR... I use the playtex drop ins and a level 1 nipple and Aubree gets the AR out just fine.. . Be careful with the level 2 nipples .. they may get too much at once and that will cause them to throw up as well

My advice being that my 1 year old DD suffered from Acid reflux as an infant is to go see a GI. Check in your area to see if there is someone who specializes in kids. They deal with this all of the time. Dr. Browns bottles really worked for me. Also, when my DD went on formula at 6 months, we used Good Start Natural cultures because she was spitting too much up on the Enfamil gentle ease. The good news is they will grow out of it.

Good luck!

How much do they weigh?  Cereal in a bottle is a loaded issue.  Funny you should bring this up.

We had an Enfamil rep at the hospital last night, and I used the time to pick her brain about adding cereal to bottles, since its such a big issue here.  Even she said that it has never been conclusively proven to provide any real help for reflux.  Of course, she said that Enfamil AR was NOT the same as simply adding cereal to a bottle...but that she hersefl did not recommend ADDING cereal at all.

She said that if Enfamil AR did not seem to help reflux symptoms, then she would recommend switching to nutramigen or other hypoallergenic formula as a next step for infants with reflux symptoms.

Important to note that she was NOT a physician.  She is actually a dietician who is also an Enfamil Rep.

My DD had the reflux really bad and our DR would not give her anything at first. He said to add the cereal and which we did, but it still didn't work. She cried for a whole month and then he finally gave in and gave her the Zantac. It took awhile for it to kick in, but when it did it worked for us. But before then I tried everything! Even the Enfamily AR and Gentlease. The formula that seemed to work best for my DD was the Nutramigen® LIPIL®. It's says its for colic, but it worked wonders. You might want to try this if you haven' t already. My DR did also recommend not feeding her too much in one feeding. Try cutting back a tiny bit and see if that doesnt' work. We also switched to the Born Free bottles and I have just fell in love with them. more than the Dr. Brown's. I know they are expensive, but I do not have any complaints. When I gave her formula with rice cereal though I would use the Green to Grow bottles....the nipples seemed to work better with the thicker flow.

we tried the nutramigen and Mekaila can't keep anything but the AR down and Jacob well he did ok I guess but not enough of a difference to stick with it....and I cut back on the feedings the past few days and still no difference and they are so fussy they just scream all the time I've got an appt with another DR tomorrow I don't know if she can help I didn't add the cereal I don't think they need it yet Jacob is 13 1/2 lbs and Mekaila is 11 1/2 lbs

Jillian has reflux too - I stopped dairy in my diet first when I was still BF.  We did that for over 2 months and then realized it just wasn't going to work.  We switched to Similac Sensitive RS and added prevacid and she is soooo much better and happier now - we all are!  The prevacid takes a little while to build up and actually start working.  My ped suggested the RS so she wouldn't spit up as much - although she isn't a spitter anyway, she would swallow it back down so she got the burn coming up and going back down.  Now she is like night and day - very happy and we have started on cereal and veggies now so I switched to the Sensitive without the RS and it seems to be doing fine for her.  And the best part is it comes in powder so we can save some money now too!!  Even at 4.5 months though she still maybe takes 5 ounces at once - and that is on a good day.  I am trying to get six 5 oz bottles in her a day but that doesn't always work.  She usually gets between 28-30 oz per day total but it is often a bottle every 2 hours during the day.

You have to give things time, that is my best advice.  Nothing is going to work overnight -I know how frustrating it is and you have it double but try to take it slower and hopefully it will all fall into place soon.

sorry to hear bout the babes having reflux.  My youngest haed it too.  We really liked the medication AXID.  She still spit up, but not nearly as much (withou the meds she was projectile).  SHe also didn't seem to have the pain when she was on the medication.  We also like the dropins with a level one nipple.  I breastfed as well and when we would supplement we would actually use soy formula.

Have you tried soy formula? Maybe they have a milk allergy.. Im actually stumped.. my daughter has reflux and as long as we don't over feed her ( 4 oz every 4 hours) and give her .. her zantac she does ok .. shes still fussy but hey shes a baby thats what she does :o)  Maybe they are teething.. and thats why they are soo fussyy

My daughter had the same exact problem when she was little.  She would projectile vomit within 15 minutes of eating...sometime less.  I don't think the problem is how much they are eating.

My doctor first had me try adding rice cereal to her formula.  That only worked for a day..then it was back to puking.  He had me try having her propped up right for 30-45 minutes after eating.  That didn't work either.  He also tried prescribing Zantac...THAT didn't work.  The only thing that worked was switching her to soy formula.  I actually ended up finding that the only one that worked was the Wal-Mart brand.  Parent's Choice.  She is now 16 months old and can drink regular cows milk with no problems.  When I started to switch her though...I started with soy milk...and then gradually switched to whole.

Try out a couple different brands of Soy Formula...it sounds like the SAME exact thing I went through for close to 5 months

Only one of my twins had this and she would projectile VOMIT since she was 5 days old, and I was breastfeeding!!  so you could only imagine what I was feeling and wondering WHAT THE HECK was going on!?! So I took them in for their 2 week checkup, talked to the Pediatrician about it and she told me not to worry.  That if she's gaining weight, they don't worry...but OMG this went on until she was 12 months old.  She fine adn all, but scare dthe **** out of me because I couldn't figure out why she would be the only one vomiting like that.  I knew it wasn't my milk because the other twin didn't vomit.  But I kept up my breastfeeding for 21 months and they're healthy little girls.

I wish you the best and hope you get the answers you want.  Doctors are such butts sometimes!!!
