Hey Ladies,
Well went into the hospital today for spotting.. They checked me.. Not dilated.. Cervix is low and soft.. The baby looks great.. What IS GOING ON??? I had a slight pink spot earlier which freaked me out so I went into the hospital just to be checked.. But now its alot more pink and sometimes bright red.. Does this sound like my mucus plug coming out?? If so how long after it comes out does labor begin?? I bet your wondering why im asking this and why the hospital didnt tell me.. Well they usually dont tell me ****... just that everything looks good.. come back if your water breaks.. they didnt explain anything to me at all.. No I didnt have a recent pap and no I havent had sex before the spotting started earlier.. so whats causing this spotting?? The nurse I had talked to my doctor and he of course wasnt concerned about anything.. so they just did a strep b test, regular urine test (looking for protein, etc...) and ANOTHER urine test on me and sent me on my way.. I asked her what they were looking for in my urine and she said she didnt know.. just following what my doctor told her to do.. Why wont THEY TELL ME ANYTHING.. I have a FREAKING right to know what they are testing me for.. Do they think there is a problem and just dont wanna cause me to get upset?? IM just getting realllllllyyyyyyy anxious right now.. Im going nuts.. Anyways.. any thoughts??

when i lost my mucus plug with my kids there was spotting but it was mucusy.  I had them about three weeks later.  How far along are you?

Spotting (pink or red) is ok.  Anything more than that deserves more than lip service.

If the first urine test was supposedly looking for protein, the second would have most likely been what is known as a clean catch urine for urinalysis/culture/sensitivity.  Did they instruct you to use those little towelette things and to catch a midstream?  That is how they check for things like infection.

Could also be the first test was contaminated by a little blood and they needed a cleaner specimen.
The only other thing I can possibly think of would be a urine test for drugs, but in NC they usually have to tell you they are doing that.  I'm not implying anything, but you asked for all the possible things they could be looking for.  The fact that she wouldn't tell you makes me think that it MIGHT have been one--but again, don't get upset.  Sometimes they do them ROUTINELY on someone who is bleeding.  Doesn't mean they think you are doing anything.

You can spot or bleed more after a vag exam, too, so try not to let it freak you out too much.  The mucus plug usually looks like a big hunk of snot, sometimes with streaks of blood.  You won't always see it.

Is your placenta at all low lying when they did the US?  Did you recently have intercourse?  The cervix can sometimes be irritated or "friable" and bleed for no reason, too.

You have 100% rights to know what they are doing.  Ask clearly what the names of all the tests were when you go back to the doctor.  If he says he doesn't know, tell him you will WAIT while he calls L&D to find out.  They HAVE to keep a record of your visit to L&D, and in it is everything they did.  YOU can also request a copy of your HOSPITAL record.  You call Medical records dept. of your hospital and ask how to obtain one from that date.  Usually the request has to be in writing.  You can't get one right away, as the record has to be finalized.  Takes a couple of weeks after the visit.

Good luck, and if the bleeding picks up and becomes more than a period, call your doctor back.  Watch for the baby's movements--they should always remain whatever is normal frequency for you.  If you develop sharp pain also call.

with your urine test they might have been checking for bacteria from a uti.  I had one that moved to my kidney's I thought the spotting was from the baby area but is wasn't everything down there is so close sometimes it's hard to tell.  My kidney infection sent me into preterm labor so maybe thats why there checking.  Good Luck!!

Hey There,
          No it wasnt a clean catch urine.. She just handed me a cup and said pee in it.. and that was it.. didnt tell me anything.. nothing! i still have pink and brown discharge and my discharge has thickened and i have alot more now.. Im having some lower back pains and pelvic pressure and pain... Im supposed to work 6-1:15 today but i dont think im going in.. Im just not feeling well.. anyways.. im gonna go lay down.. im just not feeling well at alllll.... ill be on later.. thanx everyone for your help!

Hm. Doesn't sound like a clean catch urinalysis or culture, unless they were very sloppy about collecting it.

I'm concerned about you--the contractions, the spotting, swelling, you just not feeling good...you could go early.

At your gestation, the baby should do well enough.  Please let us/me know, even if you just check in to say hey every day.
