You could wait until you miscarry, you do not have to opt for a D&C if you don't want to.  It certainly will not take as long as until your due date, your body will let it go much sooner than that.  If you opt to go for a natural miscarriage, watch for the following signs, and if you get either one, go right to your doctor or for emergency medical care.  The first is if you have a fever or dizziness; those suggest an infection.  The second is if you bleed a lot in a short time, such as filling a maxipad in less than an hour, or "flooding" a pad entirely when you stand up.

Many women opt for a D&C (medically assisted clearing out of your uterus) because it is certain and fast.  Others prefer to wait for a natural miscarriage because in general, it is easier on the body.  However, exceptions exist -- sometimes the D&C causes scarring, that gives future problems (and a need for a future procedure to remove it).   And sometimes the natural way creates an emergency, or leaves some tissue behind that needs to be removed by a future D&C.

Good luck, I am sorry you are faced with this.  I hope your body recovers and the heartache fades as well.

Some women do NOT miscarry on their on and it is very dangerous to leave a miscarried fetus in your body, it can lead to very serious infection that can cause fertility (among other) issues down the road. It's recommended that you don't wait more than a few weeks before opting for a d & c.  It is NOT adviseable to wait until your original due date.  I have had both a missed miscarriage and a natural miscarriage.  Neither is an easy thing to handle, however, the reality is that if the fetus is no longer living it needs to be removed before anything more serious happens. You CAN wait but chances are by the time you start showing symptoms of an infection it could have already affected your future fertility.

If you are concerned that your doctors diagnoses is incorrect I would suggest requesting a repeat ultrasound in another week or getting a second opinion from a different doctor.  In the case of my missed miscarriage I had 3 ultrasounds all confirming that there was no heartbeat and thought I was supposed to be 11 1/2 wks the fetus measured 9 wks 5 days.

As the above poster mentioned a d & c does carrying some risks.  Your doctor can go over these with you.  A natural miscarriage also poses a risk of not dispelling all of the products of conception.  That's why it is important that even with a natural m/c that you have your HCG levels monitored to ensure they go back to prepregnancy levels.  Sometimes a post miscarriage ultrasound is used to make sure all of the tissue has been dispelled.

As GA says, and to clarify, I was not suggesting waiting weeks and weeks for something to happen.  If you opt for a natural miscarriage, I would give it 4 weeks at most, and if nothing has happened by then, I would go see a doctor.  I also recommend continual monitoring of your hCG levels, again as GA mentioned, because it is the simplest way to know when all is finally over, and the best early way to know if there is retained tissue.  When I miscarried naturally, my doctor just wrote an open order for hCG tests to the lab, and I went in every few days to have a test done.
