18 wk u/s anatomy scan

Hi girls!  I have my big u/s next week to find out the gender and make sure everything looks normal - I was wondering if the tech will tell you if the heart, brain etc looks normal or if they won't tell you anything durind the scan??  I'm nervous I hope all looks good...

I had one at 18weeks and at 23weeks. Both were very forthcoming with information, but sometimes you never know. Actually at the one for 23 weeks we saw something that she thought was ODD so we called the Dr. in whom reads the radiology reports so that he could see it for himself.(boy did I freak out) It happened to be a shadow that the ultrasound tech couldn't identify.Hopefully you will get a talker :)

They will tell you everything.  They go part by part check the heart, lungs, for cleft palet, club feet, and any other possible abornmalities.  They left the sex check for last--and though I was so relieved to see all the fingers and toes and that nothing was wrong...we were like.."okay tell us if it is a boy or girl already!"  LOL

When is you u/s next week? Mine is 8-24-06, Thurs.
The tech will be pretty informative. At my u/s I also then immed have an appt with the doctor who then goes over the actual u/s report with DH and I and answers all our questions.

Usually the techs do not discuss very much with you at the scan.  Our tech was eager to help us find the sex and she pointed out the 4 chambers of the heart, tooth buds, and some other cool stuff but as far as telling you "Yes, the baby is normal, no problems" they won't do that.  The doctor will discuss everything with you himself at your follow-up visit.

Our first u/s with my DS showed that I had this band of skin running in my uterus, he called it a "senekia" (SP?), and I had to have another u/s about 5 weeks later to check on it.  The u/s tech did not say one word about this to me during the u/s, she took her measurements and left everything up to the doctor.

thats weired cause here in australia the ultrasound tech tells you everything goes through every individual thing explaining good or bad the doctor then gets the report and says yes everything looked great and thats it it all depends on the tech hope you get one willing to explain i heard some wont even say the sex good luck with both my girls i walked away from 18 week ultrasound knowing they where very healthy girls.

Gotcha, well good luck!! :) I am happy that my u/s can be done right in the MD office. I will be 20w3d and have not had an u/s since I was 8 weeks so DH and I are very excited.

HI, I had one of those at 16 and then 20 weeks.  At both times I had different techs.  The first one just ran through the test and did not show us anything.  I had to keep asking "what's this, what's that? does this look normal?"  She seemed to be annoyed with me but I didn't care b/c I thought I had every right to know what she was seeing.  The second time around, we didn't get a better tech.  She just told us that everything looks good and the doctor confirmed it at the follow up appt.  I guess what I'm trying to say is if you don't get a talker, make them talk.  I wanted to know so I don't wait two weeks for the doctor to tell me that all's good.

That's so frustrating!  It's a good thing you were so assertive.  I'll be the same way at my appointment. :)  My dh and I have to wait till Sept 18 to find out the gender and I haven't seen the baby since 6w (and there wasn't much to see), so this will be so exciting!!

i seemed to always get a talker with all of my u/s it also helped that i brought my grandmother with me who has been an u/s tech for over 28 years so she also did a lot of the talking. i have my next u/s on 9/11/06 to tell the gender and make sure everything is alright. they do the u/s right there in the dr office so i don't think i will need my grandmother b/c i will be seeing the dr directly after the u/s so if the tech isn't a talker which the dr said she says then the dr will expplain everything. i am also not sure where you will be going but some places have it so that if you bring a blank VHS tape they can record your u/s so you can watch it at home. i did that with every u/s i ever had with my son and i just hope that i can do the same with this one i forgot to ask but will bring a tape just in case. good luck and let us know how everything goes.
