19m Old Suddenlt Cannot Walk

19m Old Suddenlt Cannot Walk

Friday my 19m old son stopped walking. At first he was crawling and standing, then only standing and then nothing at all. I called the Dr Friday night and she advised that I should take him to the ER to be checked out. I did that; X-Rays and blood tests were negative. They only thing they found was that his white blood cell count was slightly elevated (15 and should be under 14). Since Friday there has been no change in him. He tries to walk and stand and cannot. He took a couple steps Saturday night and he struggld to do that. His legs were shaking. He has a follow appt tomorrow with his pediatrician. His only medical history is that he was 5 weeks early (he's a twin) and was born with cleft lip and palate.
Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?

Sounds like a Transient Synovial Virus,  a viral infection in the fluid surrounding the hip.  Often the child doesn't appear to be in pain,  they just can't stand or walk.

The elevated white blood cells sound about right,  too.

Google it and see what you think.  It's fairly common,  and resolves itself in a few days.

Best wishes.

It sounds like it could be that but, Friday night at the ER he was not in pain. The doctor was checking his legs- twisting, turning, pulling, range of motion and he did not mind anything she was doing. But now he does seem to be in pain. I feel that the ER should have mentioned that as a possibility. They did tell me to give him 6mL of ibuprofen every eight hours which I have been.

From what I understand,  children who get it that young don't usually appear at first to be in pain - older children do seem to say they're in pain when they first get this.

It does sound like good news if this is the problem - he should be walking again in a couple days.

I don't know why the ER didn't mention this either - it's common enough that it seems like a pretty clear first guess.

Best wishes.

Thanks for your input. Maybe they did not mention it because he was not exhibiting signs of pain? Who knows.
