2 Questions Re: Miscarriage

by cutiemama, Nov 17, 2005 12:00AM
Hi everyone. All the ladies here have been so nice and helpful and since dh and I didn't announce our PG to anyone as we were before the 12 weeks, we were not comfortable talking about our m/c.  Therefore, all the advice and opinions I've received here have been invaluable to me.

Question 1: Would anyone know when hcg should drop back down to zero after a d&c? Minw went from 102,000 to 373 after one week, but I was surprised they were even that high. What's considered normal? My doc won't take blood again for 3 weeks and he's hoping I get AF by then.

Question 2: I took and hpt and and opk on tuesday (1 week post d&c) out of curiosity because I was having a lot of ewcm and I was obviously hoping to get a BFN on the HPT.  Both came up with very bright BFPs! What's the deal? Does your body produce LH while you're  pregnant? I'm a bit confused because I thought you can't ovulate if your still pg? I know I'm not pg but I have residual hcg.

Thanks a ton for the help.

As for the opk I have no idea... Sorry...DH and I are usuing opk to hopefull get pg this month as last month was obviously unsuccessful. Good Luck w/everything, and keep us infomred!

As for question 1 I cant help being I m.c back on 10/23 and 20 days after got blood work done it was at 3 and they were lost as to it being a new pregnancy or left over.  I heard it can take 3 wks for some females to go down if that helps sorry.

And number 2 it seems you still have enough of everthing in your system to get pos results, and I heard that an opk test will come up pos if your pg it also detects the HCG hormones so I am thinking that is why you got the post yourself.  I know on my other board a lot of females used those after them m.c instead of a hpt to see if it would be pos or not.  And no you cant ovulate when your body still thinks its pg.  Your levels but I am not sure what number have to be at for it to think its not pg anymore.  I know if its 5 or less its considered a neg and your not pg anymore to the drs.  So I dont know if its the same for your body.

I think it should take about 3 weeks for your levels to go back down - that's how long it took for mine after my 2nd D&C but my levels at that point were only 300 before the D&C so yours will probably take a bit longer.
After our miscarriage I too did an hpt and got a BFP, I thought for sure I was preggo again.  The only way to be 100% is to have a blood test, see if your doc will order one before 3 weeks time.  It's an awful waiting game and I've totally been there so I know exactly how you feel.

Thanks girls. Definitely can't be pg again as dh and I haven't been BDing since the d&c. As frustrating as this is,  I will just have to wait it out. I am just hoping I don't have tissue left behind that would require another d&c.

That's what happened to me.  I strongly suggest getting a blood test as soon as possible.  Maily for your peice of mind.  Your levels should come down very quickly after a D&C.  About a week before my second one they were around 300, 2 days before they were around 250.  About 2 days after they dropped down to about 30 and within a week after that they were at 8 then a week after that they were at 0.  So my first D&C was August 11th and the second one was 6 weeks to the day after, Sept. 21.  Because of the left overs my body still had the HCG hormone in it for weeks after our actual miscarriage.  For us, it became more frustrating because we really wanted to ttc right away but because of everything that happened this is our first cycle ttc since the miscarriage.  I'm in Canada, they had a standing order for my blood so I was going weekly without having to have a requisition everytime.  But Canada's health care system is much different from the States.

Generally, the hcg levels should go down between 1 to 2 weeks, so long as the D&C was complete.  That is why the OB will generally have you take a blood test to check at the 2 week post-op.  My dr. also said not to have any unprotected sex before the test.  That way, you won't have any confusion as to if you are pregnant again or if the D&C was incomplete.

As to the hpt and opk, you should really wait at least 2 weeks before testing.  I don't think 1 week is enough while the body is still trying to adjust to normal levels.

Hi, sorry for your loss. As for the hCG, mine did not come down below 5 till 4.5 mo after d&c. The reason was uncompleted d&c. I did get periods before it was below 13 though. But those period were weird. So my suggestion to you would be to request blood hCG monitoring to your dr. If he/she refuses, find another dr that is willing to do that for you. It is your body after all. Keeping hCG high for long time when you are not pregnant is not good for your reproductive system. Good luck.

According to my Dr. you can still test + on HPT's or have HCG in your body up to ten weeks after d&c or delivery of a baby.  I had a d&c on 10/24 almost 4 weeks ago and I only got a BFN finally yest.  I've taking $ store HPT's for this purpose.  Also you can ovulate with HCG in your body still, hence the reason you are very fertile post m/c.  HTH, Lauren

It took mine two weeks to go down.  I miscarried twice, then carried two pregnancies afterward.  My mom is a lab tech and after the 2nd miscarriage, she took my blood once a week for the first three months to wach the hcg rise.  It was comforting to see it go up instead being ready to watch it go down.

so 5 hcg means not pregnant?  im confused because they did a blood test on november 11 and it came back exactly at 5 and told me i wasnt pregnant, but two days ago (november 19-20) , i had a miscarriage, i was 5 weeks pregnant. now im really confused?
Why would it be so low if i was 5 weeks pregnant?
