20wk Preterm Labor (PROM)

20wk Preterm Labor (PROM)

I am a 30 year old that have just experienced PROM preterm labor at 20 weeks and 2 days.  My Baby boy did not survive the birth.  My husband and I are trying to cope with our loss. This was my first pregnancy.  I am over weight.  My weight at the time of conception 290 and I dropped to about 280 during pregnancy and steady losing weight.  I was diagnosed with Group B streptococcus (group B strep) treated with antibiotics during most of my pregnancy.  And I was borderline diabetic during the pregnancy.  I did not take medications for diabetes, I watched my blood surgar.  I kept good blood sugar levels.  My question.  Did my weight, Strep B, or good sugar levels cause my water to break early?  And is there anything I can do to keep this from happining again?  What are my chances of having a healthy full term pregnancy after what I have gone through and the conditions I was in during this last pregnancy? I want to try again in the next three months.  We are affraid to do so...  Thank you for your help..

I am so sorry for your loss, that must have been so traumatic.  I don't really have any medical answers for you.  You probably should have a follow up with a high risk doctor.  He may have more answers for you.

In the meantime, please take good care of yourself.

Sometimes, in spite of the best obstetrical care, the best condition of the mother, and everything being perfectly normal, the membranes can rupture or preterm labor can develop.  It is a dreaded complication that unfortunately we can often do little about.

You should see a high risk perinatologist prior to becoming pregnant, and bring all your hospital and prenatal records with you for his/her review.  That way, if he/she does feel like something happened that could be correctable, it can be addressed prior to pregnancy being attempted, perhaps.

There are women on this forum who have experienced PPROM and subsequently had a normal pregnancy next time around.  Hopefully, they can give you their stories.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm very sorry that you had to go thru such a terrible thing. I pray that you get pregnant again and have a wonderful full term pregnancy.
Just curious, why did they test you for Group B strep  so early? I didnt think they did that until like 36 weeks. Also I didnt think they tested for gest. diabetes until 28 weeks. Did they find these in your urine samples early on?

Try to find the best high risk docs in your area. I know where I live there are team of docs who work with high risk like multiples and things of that sort

Sometimes the doctor will do a urine culture with the first or second office visit.  If it grows GBS, it is often indicated to treat the woman during the pregnancy with several courses of antibiotics.  For some reason, GBS has been shown to be more virulent or problematic if it is found in a urine culture, and thus is treated more aggressively.

I'm a 21 year old prom sufferer. Early one morning before my husband went back to work after PT, I woke up due to stomach cramps. When I went to the restroom my membrane ruptured and I went into labor. Fortunately my labor stopped, thank God. Our doctor then told myself and my husband that we would have to let them induce labor and let our child expire. That, of course, was not an option. So we decided to wait it out. Because if I was not in labor, there was no reason why I should have had to watch my child die that day. The doctor was very upset with our decision so much so that he passed us off to everyone he could. From the nurses, to the midwives, even to his daughter who has barely been practicing for a year. He then went on vacation while I was lying in a hospital bed. He even told us that our little girl would not live three days. Well, she proved him wrong and lived 10, even with a prolapsed cord. On May 1st our baby (Joy Renee) was pronounced dead through ultrasound. Later on that day I was induced, my doctor... nowhere to be found. This however was not the end of my agony. At my 6 wk check up I discovered that my "doctor" had not made any notes in my file back at his office. The nurses, while looking at my file, were asking me how was my baby doing. And the midwife, whom the doctor had assigned, had to go to him and asking him what my prognosis was and what we should do now. Needless to say, I left that office irate, disappointed, and hurt. But my road to recovery hit yet another bump. One month after her death, we were waiting to receive her death certificate. It was then that we found out that the doctor was holding it on his desk and had not signed it yet. And now almost four months later it still hasn't come yet. Please pray for me that GOD will guide me in what to do. Because at this point with all that has come forth and has taken place. I could possibly have the power to end his career or hurt his credibility, by coming forth and telling of my experience.

I'm really sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers.  I doubt that it was anything that you did or anything you could have done to prevent it, sometimes things happen.  Take care of yourself.
