4.1 wks sac, so get a d&c???? So confused!

Hi all!  I'm new to this, actually came across it by accident.  Here goes my story- I had a positive test at home on 3/20/11, but started bleeding the next day.  Went to the ER (wasn't sure what was going on) and they said it was an early miscarrige.  Well a month passes, and didn't have a period, took another test at home, said positive.  Well I went to the Dr a few days later, and they also tested me, and got a positive, but started bleeding again that day, 4/25/11.  Well a week went by, took another test, and it said negative.  I didn't think nothing more of it.  Well, May ended, with no bleeding.  Well 6/1/11 I took another at home test, and got a positive, and haven't started bleeding yet as of today, 6/3/11.  I told the dr yesterday all of this (though I'd done told them I'd been bleeding and they hadn't even made note of it in my chart or anything!), and they sent me for an ultrasound.  The u/s showed a gestational sac measuring at 4.1 weeks, but no embryo or yolk (sp?).  The dr didn't order blood tests, nothing, just stated that the pregnancy wasn't viable because I should have been 10 weeks.  Well I'm confused.  Is it possible there was another miscarriage in April, with the bleeding and negative test, and I concieved in May also?  Should I listen to the dr and just go do the d&c without getting a second opinion?  None of this makes sense to me.  I feel they should have done bloodwork, not only yesterday, but last month too.  The d&c is scheduled for Monday, but I canceled it to get a second opinion that same day.  If I need a d&c, I will do one, but if the sac is measuring 4.1 weeks, and I wasn't pregnant the first week of May (according to the negative test and bleeding) then that would be about correct, wouldn't it?  Anyone that could help, I'd greatly appreciate it.  Anyone who has dealt with any of this, please, please, please let me know how it turned out for you!!

You need to get a second ultrasound in a week or two and see what's going on. It could very well be a new pregnancy, as it sounds like you lost one and then immediately got pregnant again.

Go to your regular ob-gyn, not to the ER, and treat it as though it is a new pregnancy.  If they run two hCG tests 48 hours apart, they will be able to tell fast enough whether the numbers are rising or dropping or just holding still.  The ER is not very useful in early pregnancy, you need your regular ob who takes you seriously.  If your ob-gyn doesn't take you seriously, get a new ob-gyn.

I did go to the dr through all of this, minus the one trip to the ER.  The dr is trying to do all of this, without doing any bloodwork.  Found another dr today, will see them Monday, but wanted some advice from someone that may have knew something about it or has experienced it!

If you have any doubt then definitely do not do the d&c yet. You are right, they should at least do the blood work first and wait a week or two and do another u/s. If you got the d&c now without doing all these tests you will always wonder if you did the right thing and that would be just devastating for you. I went in for my first u/s this week and my baby is measuring small and has no fetal pole. My doctor says it is probably not a viable pregnancy (and he is probably right in my case) but he still didn't order a d&c. He had me do blood work to see if my numbers are where they are suppose to be. Well the bloodwork showed my numbers are still too low and yet they still are waiting until this Wednesday to do another u/s and blood test to be 100% sure this pregnancy is not viable. My situation it is 95% likely it is not a viable pregnancy but my doctor still isn't rushing to the d&c because there is absolutely no reason to not wait and make sure. Good luck. I hope you are actually only 4 weeks along and the doctor is wrong.
