5 months old, rolling over question and sleep

Hi all it is Harley-girl however I had to reset my info and was unable to use my old nickname for some reason!!!
Quinn is now 5 months and can roll over. However my DH and I freak when we put her down at night she rolls to her tummy and buries her face into her crib mattress. I freak out all night worrying she is going to suffocate herself. I always check on her and roll her back onto her back. For the most part she stays that way. How have you all handled this new development of them rolling onto their tummies for sleep?

My 2nd and 3rd boys rolled over back to belly consistently starting at 3 weeks (I know, freakish babies, my first didn't roll back to belly until 4 months old). I spent endless nights flipping them back over and when I brought it up to the pedi at their 2 month check ups he stated that if they have the strength to roll over on their own, the risk is lower for suffocation. He still advocated putting them on their back to sleep, but was dead set against sleep positioners to prevent the rolling over saying he felt those posed a greater danger. SO if they rolled over I would still try to flip them back but it wasn't deemed necessary as they possesed the strength to lift their heads completely and roll on their own.

Usually when they are devoloped enough to roll on their own, they are fairly safe.  MAKE SURE to rid the crib of everything at this time, including the bumper.  In addition, go in periodically to flip her.  Yes, she will spend some time sleeping on her belly, and if she gets there on her own, and your not around to turn her....she'll be fine.

If your still not comfortable, lock her in the swing or bouncer, and have her spend the night in that....

I must have a lazy baby! He finally loves being on his tummy now after 3 months of crying and burrying his face in the floor every time he was on his tummy, but doesn't roll from tummy to back. He is trying to roll from back to tummy and is getting so mad he can't! He hasn't yet figured he neeeds to move his arm and so keeps getting stuck and ends up pushing himself around in circles instead! I agree with the others, if she can roll herself she is strong enough to move if she needs to and the risk of anything happening to her now is pretty minimal. Glad to hear she is doing good!

My boy is almost the same age, and has been rolling from tummy to back since about three weeks old, but shows zip interest in rolling from back to tummy.  Thanks for the heads-up:  he'll probably do it for the first time on the changing table by a full bathtub someday soon when I'm not expecting it.

My first baby rolled around 4 months both ways, but this one has been going back and forth since just before 6 weeks.  I was shocked when he did it, but so glad I was there to see the first this time.  My Dr. said the same thing though, if they are strong enough to roll, they have the muscles to move their head to breathe and will wake if there is a problem.  I did take away the sleep positioner though so it would not interfere.  This one sleeps in his car seat still, it's the only way I can get him to stay out for more than a 1/2 hour.
