5 year old boy says his pee pee hurts

My 5 year old son woke up this morning saying his pee pee hurts. I asked him if he needed to go potty and he said no but I helped him go anyway since he was still a little sleepy. He was whimpering a little though and I asked him to show me where it hurts and he patted the area right above his penis. Would this be his bladder then? I didn't think boys usually get bladder infections. I thought that was more common in girls. He acted ok after that and went to school. I'm just wondering what that was all about.

It's very possible if he had just woken up that his bladder was so full it hurt.  This has happned to my son and to myself.   I wouldn't be too worried about it unless he consistenly has pain.

I agree.  It could also be that he had a small morning erection--it could have gone away by the time you saw it.  

Sometimes a strange or funny sensation *there* will make a small child say "it hurts", as they don't have much other descriptive words.

My four year was complaining about his pee-pee hurting.  It was little red, so I took him to the doctor.  It was an infection from having diareah that got onto it.  Is he feeling better now?

Yeah, except he threw up last night, sigh. Maybe it was his tummy after all, although he patted the area right above his privates. I don't know.
