5 year old vomits at night

by 1mommyof3, Oct 29, 2008 02:20PM
My 5 year old has these episodes where he vomits at night after he has fallen asleep. This has been going on for approx. 2 years. He will be asleep for about 2 hours and then will vomit all over himself and he does not wake up. He will usually do this 1 time per night for 3-4 nights. There is no sign its coming, and it is very irregular in pattern. Sometimes he might do this one month and then 2 months will go by nothing happens, then he will have an epidsode again. It is not triggered by any food he is eating, and I can't associate it with eating to close to bedtime either. I just never know when its going to happen. The vomit is always undigested food, ther is no yellow or green color. He is also a very happy outgoing child and he doesn't remember vomiting, he never complains of a belly ache or a headache. He has had a CT scan to rule out brain tumor that was all clear, he has had upper endoscopy they didn't find anything other than he did have some mild redness, due to the vomiting. He was on Prevacid for awhile and Periactin but I couldn't keep him on it long because he hated the taste. His last episode was on Oct 17 he vomited once each night for 4 nights now hes fine. I took him back to GI, they want to diagnose him as cyclic vomiting syndrome and want him to back on Periactin. I would love to hear your insight on my son. Thank-you for any help or advise

I watch way too many medical programs.

I don't remember what program I was watching, but it was about an 8 year old girl who had these exact symptoms and she was diagnosed with having seizures.

Has your son had an EEG? If not, I would inquire about one, it couldn't hurt anything.

My son has done the same thing for about 4 years and he is 8 now.  Never have gotten an answer.  Doctors seem very unconcerned.  Did you ever get and answer?

My son does this, turns out his is just simple reflux. That being said, I would still highly recommend you get this thoroughly investigated.

Nana-I saw the same show and thought the same thing, lol.

Yes and no. My doctors do seem very concerned. I took him back to the ped. GI in Nov and he was put back on the Periactin. He started taking that 2mg every night at bedtime on Dec 1st since then no vomiting. I have concerns when is he ever going to get off the medicine, etc.. but for now it seems to be working and he has no side effects to the medicine. I want to take him out of town to a different ped GI eventually because the one we have locally I can not understand half of what he is saying. Thanks for your post!
