5 yr old nasal problems

by chum, May 24, 2004 12:00AM
my 4.5 yead olds son has never been able to breath through his nose without blockage, he is constantly straining to get air through his nose, at times it is so bad he breathes through his mouth.  doctors are not concerned, a non-issue to them.  others have mentioned similiar situations with their children & their doctors suggesting alergies (allergies) with a solution providing more oxygen, better behavior, mood, grades, etc...  could this be a deviated septum, anoids, alergies (allergies)?  is my sons brain starving for oxygen?  is this something to outgrow?  saline drops and nastal sprays do nothing, either he shoved a few rocks up his nose or its blockage of a non-mucus sort.  any ideas appreciated? thank you.

How many doctros have you taken him to? You said others have had the same problem and their dr helped their children, have you tried to take your child to one of their dr's?

Hi, I can not say that it is a deviated septum but is sure sounds like it. Have you gotten him to an ENT yet. Ear Nose and Throat doctor. If not I would suggest getting him into see one. Most of them will not do surgery until he is much older if it is indead a Deviated septum because they are still growing. Mine was real bad but mine was caused buy a car accident that had broken my nose. So the cartlidge was all screwy and blocking the passage so it was always stuffy. If he is getting dranage that comes out then I am not sure. Mine was real blocked up. Please get him to an ENT that way they can give you a better idea of what you can give the little guy. Sorry he has this problems. I know it is hard when an adult cant breath correctly. I could only imagine what he is going through

Good luck and hope he gets help soon

To: I agree - ENT
Take him into an ENT if you haven't already.  My son had such big adenoids (adenoids) that they removed them.  They tried flonase and other sprays to no avail.  Good luck! By the way my son's so much better now (this was a month ago) and he sleeps well and everything now!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ADVISE.  HE HANDLES IT VERY WELL BUT YOU CAN HEAR HIM STRUGGLE WITH BREATHING THROUGH THE NOSE.  SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE DEVIATED SEPTUM OR ADENOIDS (adenoids).  HE HAS BLOCKAGE AND NO DRAINAGE OR MUCAS.  SALINE DROPS AND THE REST DO NOTHING.  WILL DO THE ENT NEXT, THANKS AGAIN.
