5.5 wks w/ Normal rising HCG levels, but light bleeding and no visual on the ultrasound

I am hoping someone can help me out.  I am abou 5.5 weeks pregnant and at about 5 weeks I experienced some bleeding.  It was brown at first and light and then was bright red.  I was experiencing lower back pain, but no cramping.  I immediately called the OBGYN thinking I had miscarried.  I went in and they performed an interior ultrasound on which they couldn't see anything.  I explained my symptoms and she said that I should have my HCG levels tested, but based on what was going on that it was likely I was miscarrying.  Today my levels came back and she said that they had more than doubled which is what they are suppose to do if I am pregnant.  She said that if I was miscarrying, the levels should decrease or only slightly increase.  I am still having some bleeding which is obviously a concern and a bit of cramping in the evenings, but nothing severe,  I know that I should relax, but I am extremely stressed out because this is my first pregancy and I have no idea what to expect and what is normal.  Has anyone experienced anything similar?  Any help would be great.

My cousin did the same thing with one of hers. She had severe bleeding and cramping and was sure she m/c. An u/s showed nothing at the time but two weeks later after a recheck of hcg levels they had doubled plus some. That prompted another u/s and there was the lil bean. Ovulation days can be off making some women think they are further than they are and bleeding can be caused from many things like implantation bleeding. I would get another u/s to make sure pregnancy is in fact progressing normally because as of now it sounds like you were earlier than expected and having normal bleeding. Btw..most of my cramping from the stretching uterus occurs mainly at night. I have had intermittent spotting off and on so far since 10wks and I am now 13wks. The last u/s showed everything was fine and doc could find no reason for the bleed so sometimes it remains a mystery but baby goes on to be just fine!!   ^_^
