6-7 wk pregnant, saw gestational sack and yolk sack, but no fetal pole...

by vanepur, Mar 05, 2007 12:00AM
I'm 30 and I have a very irregular cycle.  I was on the pill for a long time, until last Aug-06 when we decided it was time for a baby.  My last period was on 11-25-06... but this means nothing to me b/c since August, I had my period only twice.  During Jan07, I took wkly PTs b/c I still had not gotten my period.  In early Feb07, I made an apptmt with my dr b/c of the missed period and the neg PTs.  The day after I made the apptmt, I suddenly felt sick, so I did another PT.  This one came back +.  This was on 02-8-07.  I went to the dr's office on Feb 9th for the quant hcg and it came back + at 45.  The dr said that it was too early in the preg, so over the next 2 wks, I had blood drawn every other day.  The last test, done on Feb21 indicated hcg levels of 3,977.  The dr said this indicated normal hormone growth and that they were doubling as appropriate...  B/C I am so irreg, it is difficult for me to know how far along I am; based on the hormone levels and when I found out, I'm guessing that by now (Mar5-07) I s/b 6-7 wks along...I had my first U/S today and they found the sack and the yolk, but they did not see the embryo... The dr said that it could be that it's still too early or that the embryo was hidden behind the yolk... I don't know what's happening.  Is
the sack empty?  I really don't believe that I am 5 wks or less into my pregnancy b/c finding out that I was pregnant through a HPT on Feb-8-07 doesn't really make sense if I really were 5 wks along right now.  I mean, if I do the math, it just deosn't add up...
Has this happened to anyone else?

Other information:
Besides the MS that I felt on Feb 8th when I did the home PT, I have not felt sick again.  The preg symptoms that I have are that my breasts are extremely sore and feel very heavy, I am more sensitive to certain smells, and I feel more tired than usual.  I have also had some minor cramps at both sides (like I usually get when I'm ovulating).  It's more like a pinch than a cramp and they go away fast.

Also, I had a missing MC 3 yrs ago and I had to have a D&C.  I haven't been pregnant again since that time.

If anyone else has gone through this, please let me know.  I'm going crazy!!  I'm so worried that this could mean another misscarriage...

Sometimes the math doesn't add up...especially when you have wacked up cycle dates.
I got a positive hpt at night, 5 days prior to expected af.  At this point in pregnancy, 5 days make a night and day difference.  Your hcg levels doubled as normal, and it has been confirmed that you have an intrauterine pregnancy, and not ectopic.  My bet...everything is fine.
You will see a fetal pole at the next u/s.  Relax.

by tatorbug40, Mar 05, 2007 12:00AM
I agree-  the levels were all that high, so it still might be early-  I had a m/c early in Feb.  I had levels checked on 2/5- 20,000 and 2/7- 26,000---  they did not double...  and my doc said that at 20,000 he should have seen the heart beat...  but if yours are still at 9,000 but doubling, I think that is a good sign that it was just too early to see the fetus...  I bet everything will be fine...  I had a m/c 5 years ago- and waited 3 years before getting pregnant again-  I didn't have my first u/s on that one until 9 w 3d, and everything was fine-  I have a 2 year old now!!  I think everything will be fine- your levels increasing is the most important thing!

hi, just thought i would let u know that ur not alone in this confusing stuff, im pretty much going through the same thing (rising hcg level, gestational sac and nothing else)  it is really stressful as u cant stop urself from thinking about the possible outcomes, but i have come to see that u just have to believ what ever is meant to happen will happen.  its easier said than done but given that u have a yolk sac (unlike me) i would expect that u would see a bub in ur belly next u/sound.

by vanepur, Mar 06, 2007 12:00AM
Thank you for your comments, I really feel much better after reading them.  I think I'm just anxious because of my prior M/C... And the fact that I don't have the morning sickness, the frequent urination, the bloating or gassiness... I'm hoping for the best!
I have another U/S next Monday, so we're praying that we see something besides the yolk sack!
THANKS!!!!

To: Update...
I had another ultrasound today and we saw the little tiny baby and a small heartbeat.  The doctor said that it was normal for ealy in the 6th week, and the she confirmed that I was exactly 6 weeks pregnant and due on november 5th.
Thank you all for your comments of encouragement!!
We are sooo happy to have seen our little one!

Jennifer  I am going through the same thing.   My  lmp was Jan 27th/07. I do however know I ovulated later..around Feb 21st.  I got my postive hpt on March 5th.  I started  bleeding MArch 17th. Went to the ER where  they  said my cervix was closed. I went for an u/s on 3/20  and was told there is just a gestational sac.  I saw my GP today where  he confirmed the sac measured 6 wks  but no Hb or fetal pole was seen and asked if I have ever heard of blighted Ovum.    He sent me  for HCG levels  and am to go back on Friday!  However the resulats will not be in  until Monday!
I have been very ill and  have lost 5 lbs from what  I thought was m/s.  My dr said that  he will not book another u/s until  he sees if my levels are going up or staying the same or declining!

by middwebb, Mar 23, 2007 12:00AM
I am totally new to this forum, but I'm SO glad I found it!  I am going through the exact same thing you ladies described.  My LMP started 2/2/07 and we finally got around to the hpt on 3/13, which was positive.  The past 2 days, I have had some minor, brownish spotting (which didn't worry me), then some red spotting last night.  I flipped out and called the doctor, who had me in for an ultrasound this morning.  They had thought I was 6 weeks, 6 days along, but the ultrasound didn't really support that.  The doctor said that my uterus was measuring small for almost 7 weeks.  She also found the gestational sack and yolk sack, but couldn't get a clear view of the fetal pole (she thought she saw the beginnings of it, but that was it).  Needless to say, we're having the big wait ourselves until next Friday's u/s.

by StefnDi, Mar 23, 2007 12:00AM
Its amazingly actually a little nerve calming to read how many women are actually in a situation similar to what we are in. My Menses are very irregular, my LMP was January 10th and I got a positive on a HPT on 03/17. I went to my PA yesterday 03/22 and had a U/S that showed a gestational sack, yolk and no pole. Of course I cried. She said that it is probably that we are not as far along as we first thought. She thinks I might be about 4 and half weeks instead of the 9 that we thought. Im scheduled to go back on April 5th for an U/S and are hoping for a heartbeat. I am trying to be VERY optimistic about the whole thing its just kind'a nerve wrecking. Thank you all for your post it really calmed my nerves. Thanks!

I just went to the doctor yesterday for an ultrasound. We could not see the fetus, but everything else as you described. Sahe told me if it had been probably a few more days we probably could have a seen a little something. I'm only 5 1/2 weeks.

by JuniperWI, Mar 30, 2007 12:00AM
I am 9w 5d.  At 4 w 3 d, my HSG was 348.  At 4w, 5d, it was 701.  When I went in for u/s at 6w, 5d, we expected to see more than 1.  We saw an empty sac.  HSG was 19000.  At 7w, 3d, 2 days b4 the scheduled D & C, we saw a yolk sac.    Went in again today, yolk sac has grown, but still no fetus....  Anyone had something like this happen and had success?  I can't in good conscience schedule another D & C as long a there is growth.

In my case there was no baby on the sack. I was very worried and so depressed right now.I dont want to have miscarriage. Does anybody here experiencing the same thing.Next next week, I will go through another TVS, this time I am 7 weeks pregnant.By that time I should have the embryo...hopefully.Guys please pray for me and my baby! Im keeping my finger crossed. Thanks so much!

I had IVF done because I could not conceive naturally.  I have one 2 year old from IVF.  I just had it done again and go a + blood test on August 31.  I went in for an ultrasound this past Monday and I should be around 6 and a half weeks.  However, the doctor said it was measuring too small.  He said I would likely miscarry.  He did say we would give it the benefit of the doubt and for me to come back in a week for another ultrasound.  I have had no cramping or bleeding and I still feel prenant (nausea, bloating, gassy, sore breast, etc.)  I just don't know what is going on!!!

by mybabyangel, Oct 19, 2007 04:24AM
Power of positive thinking girls!! I have just gone and had my first ultra sound for my first pregnancy and they have seen a sack and the yolk but no baby. When i was laying there (busting to go to the loo i might add...haha) i was surprised that the lady doing the u/s said "yes i can definitely see the pregnancy" I wanted her to say "your baby" not "pregnancy" but no... they are quite detached i think!! Anyway, what ever happens it is in Gods hands right?  I mean i want to see my baby soo soo soo bad to know that the little one is ok but lets all just have some positive thinking, stop stressing and start believing in what is meant to be will be! Good luck to you all and i will be thinking of you!! Angel

Hi I am about 4 week`s and had a ultrasound today. they say I am about 4 week`s dute date would be NO 3,2008 and  the gestational sack is low there is a sack and yoke but judgeing by the positioning of the gestational sack wich the yock is in the center the baby may be not able to get the proper nutrient`s to develop, and they claim they should of seen a heart beat and pole I have three boy`s and alway`s thought you couldn`t see any thing until at least 2 month`s I dont understand, my level`s are over 7000and the other is 48, they whant to rerun the ultrasound next week and are acting as if there still is no pole or heart beat to end the pregnancy , any advice thank`s renee

My husband and I just went to have our first ultrasound, but didnt see the fetus, just an empty sac.  He believes it is a blithed ovum. I had a blood test done and now need to wait for the results. I am 6 weeks 6 days gestational and 4.6 fertilization age. I got pregnant with UI (insemination) He mentioned the D&C depending on the results..any suggestions? Thanks so much! susa

I didn't realize how common this is and found nothing about it anywhere else but in this forum. i was spotting very little and it didn't last but the docs wanted me to come in for an U/S to make sure the baby is ok and i am soposed to be 6wks 1 day according to my LMP, well they pulled up the picture on the U/S machine and it showed a clear yolk sack but no baby anywhere and the docs said i can be earlier then they thought or a blighted Ovum which means the baby stopped developing sometime during the 1st week or so. i gave a blood test today and go Saturday morning to give another blood test and i just pray my levels double or triple. this is my fourth pregnancy and this never happened to me b4. i wish all you ladies the best of luck and keep me posted as i will do the same.

I just found out last week that i was pregnant. I am pretty sure that i am spmewhere from 8 weeks to 11 weeks.. two days after i found out i was pregnant i went and got blood work and the first U/S done. they then found that there was only a gestational sack and no baby.. i want to stay positive and only think the best but its hard.. the doctor also took some blood work and the hcg levels where seem to be low. it scares me because i want this baby more that anything.. he wanted me to come back in two days and do some more blood work.. i am 17 and my mom and dad are not helping me with anything.. i dont have a drivers license because i just got out of foster care and was adopted and have not had the chance to do so yet.. its monday now i was suppose to go in saturday night or sunday morning.. my parents wont take me and its about 45 minutes away.. in a way i kinda am scarred to go and find out because miscarriage is my worste fear and i dont think i could do it.. and they say its either earlie stages of my pregnancy or i am miscarrying.. anyone have ideas?? i am sorry you all are going through this.. in a way its helped me a little to know there are other women going through the same thing as me and that i am not by myself.. i wish the best for all of you.. keep me posted.. you can email me at ***@****

Thank God for this Forum. Im very early in pregnancy. Maybe 4 weeks. We see a  gestational sac, no fetal pole , but  my cervix is starting to open and I spotted a little. BAsed on what I have read in this forum I wouldn't be too worried, except my cervix is starting to open. Has anyone dealt with the cervix opening this early and if so did it end in a D&C?

I am reading this for support, and no one seems to be following up to say what was the results of their tests.  Today was my first apt.  I was supposed to be 10 wks and 1 day.  4th pregnancy, no problems before.  My Doc says I am only measuring 6 weeks and no sign of a baby.  I just wish people had followed up with their postings so I could know whether to have hope.  I go back on Monday for bloodwork to check my hormone levels.  I don't know what they were today, but I have pretty much lost hope for this pregnancy.  Anyone have a similar problem with a great outcome?

This morning I was having cramps in my lower abnomon.  So I was thinking... Okay, so it appears I might be having the start of a miscarriage, I guess I had totoally convinced myself that this pregnancy is not going to continue.  I called my Dr. and the nurse said that they received the results of my progesterone levels and they are good, over 25,000.  She said it would be much lower if I were in danger of a miscarriage, but I still need to come in monday to recheck my levels.  So I'm thinking pretty positive at this moment. She said the cramping is normal.  I thought I would just post more of what was going on, just incase there is a reader out there wondering.  I'll check back in next week with my results.

Well, I got my second results back and my levels were going down. (I was told that on Tues Sept 23rd.  I started spotting that Friday.  I had already decided that this was just not the right time, so it hasn't been completely traumatic for me.  For anyone who has not been through a miscarriage, I will say.... the contractions are very painful.  It pushes out blood clots of all sizes.  So be prepared for the heavy bleeding.  I know I still have a couple more days of this, but then I can move on and start over.

I am having my first Miscarriage at 4 weeks, my partner and I were really exited about having our first baby. I started bleeding last sunday and went to hospital.  They kept me over night and did the check for ectopic and did a U/S that showed an unusual and abnormal sack, that they weren't sure if it was empty or not and had a HCG reading.  I was bleeding heavily and passed clots but no tissue kind of products yet.
I went to have the HCG levels checked again two days later, which were low and that day I noticed a lump of product come out that was purplish and like tissue that I thought was the Gestational sack. The night before I was in so much pain and cramping and I just thought I'd had a full miscarriage.  I went back to the doctors today and had another U/S and the U/S guy said he saw what he thinks is an empty sack still in the Uterus.  I am concerned about what it was I passed, I did not keep it but one Dr saw it and said it was like product, I buried it under a tree.  Now I am cramping heavily again like I did when I passed the first product.  I am scheduled to have a D&C Next monday.   I wanted to Ask If anyone has had something similar and wether I am cramping and in pain to maybe pass the remaining product.

I wish this was all over, I am emotional and stressed and my partners is emotional and having a hard time dealing with it and I cant be a comfort to him.

Its also my 30th Birthday and I planned to have a weekend away in nature and I am stuck in the city.

But its a comfort to know I can talk about it to others with similar problems. ...My best wishes to you all.

Thanks.

I hope you are feeling a bit better.  What you passed sounds a bit similar to what a friend of mine passed when she miscarried.  For me personally, I didn't see anything besides tons of clots.  It has been 3 weeks and my bleeding is just now subsiding.  I had talked to other people who had miscarriages and they only bleed for about a week.  So I see that everyone is different.

My husband really hasn't been having a difficult time.  I am actually doing well myself.  Throughout all of this I have become more spiritual, if that makes sense.  Realizing that we all have trials to face and a miscarriage can be a very personal trial to strengthen our faith.  Within the last week I found out that I have to have surgery for an entirely different reason, nothing major, but if the pregnancy had continued, I couldn't have the surgery, and probably would've put it off while nursing, which could turn into a year and a half.  The meds for the surgery can't be used while pregnant or nursing.  I'm impressed how the Lord knows us and knows our needs and provides a way for things to work out.

You'll be in my prayers and I hope that you can find peace, through this trial you are facing.

This site is fantatsic. My partner and i are experiancing many of the above symptoms. I have had bleeding the last couple of days & i had an u/s today, there was no visable heartbeat or embryo but all the sack & yolk are all in place. It is a very stresful time as nobody can give you an exact answer as it is so early in the pregnancy (6 weeks) Reading these post give you hope that it is very common and you are not alone.

So I miscarried the end of September.  I wanted to let everything pass on it's own.  I think I would've felt a little uncertain had I had a d&c right away.  I bled for a total of 4 weeks.  Had 4 weeks without, then started, what I thought was a regular cycle.  Not so.  I bled a week.  Stopped for a few days, started bleeding again.  A few days later bled again.  I went in to the doctor today and they found tissue still inside.  It's been nearly 3 months.  I can't believe there was still tissue.  So now I have to go in for a d&c anyway next week.  This means I can't start trying until march.  What a year this has been.  It took 7 months to get pregnant in the first place. Sheesh....  If I could give advice, I would almost recommend the d&c once you are certain, waiting just pushes your hopes of trying again so much longer. At least for me it has.
