6 week ultrasound. Showed yolk sac but no fetal pole

Hello. This is my second pregnancy. My first had a little spotting, but other than that, it was a normal helthy pregnancy. I am pregnant again and the doc was a little concerned because my HCG levels were pretty high. (71,000) and 87,000 on the 29th.They did an ultrasound on 9/27, and only saw a sac. They did another one the very next day because of the HCG levels, and were able to see a yolk sac and POSSIBLE fetal pole, but werent certain. They ruled out a ectopic pregnancy and molar pregnancy, and then to told me that since they ruled those 2 out, my levels were within range. I am 6 weeks 5 days right now, and am not certain if it is very possible to see the embryo right now, and if it is a good sign that they saw a yolk sac. They are doing another u/s friday, and i am really scared because i have never had a miscarriage before

i forgot to mention that i was 5 weeks 4 days, and 1 days shy of 6 weeks with both the ultrasounds. i will be 7 week 1 days on fridays ultrasound!

I think that it is too early to tell.  You are still really early in the pregnancy.  I would wait a few more weeks to start worrying, although, I know that is easier said than done.

This is way to early.Dont worry at least you saw something(mine was ectopic)Wait til next u/s.You will be fine.From what I've heard 5-6 wks is still early,plus your hcg levels look good.Keep us posted,Nanis

By Friday they should see a heartbeat and everything. You don't need to wait several weeks for that. Best wishes.

I had 3 u/s. 6wk-7wk-8wks...always saw the yolk sac and possible embreyo but no fetal pole or hb on any u/s.

By my 3rd and last u/s it was clear I had to have a d&e.  The placenta appeared to be leaking blood and there was what could have been an early early embreyo but that's it.

Listen to your drs for your health.  I've heard many many success stories here and you could be one.  I unfortunately wasn't but I'm praying for you.

during this pregnancy at 5 wks 5 days all they saw on the u/s was a yolk sac and gestational sac no fetal pole. then i went in a week later and everything was fine and i am now 23 weeks. good luck it is real early to see anything

I don't think they can rule out a molar pregnancy yet. I had a molar pregnancy and had a completely normal sonogram at 7 weeks. The only thing was that there was no heartbeat but it didn't look like a molar yet. They just thought I might be earlier than I thought. At 10 weeks the whole sac was full of growths and it was a complete molar. My hcg's were up in the 300,000 range though.

I am not saying yours is a molar but just wanted to share that they cant rule it out that early sometimes.

Need some support of some advice. I had a ultra sound about two weeks ago which showed a sac but no baby. They are doing another one on tuesday and i am really nervous. What are the chances that there will be a baby. The u/s sound showed that i was just shy of 6weeks?

Hi my name is Gaby I am 7 weeks now last friday I went to do an u/s due to bleeding the results were not good because they see 2 separate gestational sac 1 sac no contain fetal pole and no cardiac activity, the other sac is good aparantely are twins but one is not going to make it I have twins they are 7 year now and feel soo terrible for my my baby thatt did not make it but thank God at least I am going to have one

I had the same situation when I went for my ultrasound with the exact week as you are.  the doctor said everyting is fine anyway and that I just have to wait a little longer to see it because of a tilted uterus.  My next doctor's appointment won't be till 25th and it;s dragging.  I am now 9weeks 4days along and feeling normal except for morning sickness in the evenings.  I know how you feel.. I even bought a doppler that is not working for the at the moment. :( iguess due to tilted back uterus again

At 6 weeks, you are still too early to really hear a heartbeat or to see a baby.  Most of the time, they can see a sac at that point.  And heart develops in this week, so be patient.  But at 7 weeks, it should be (not always certain) visible an audible.  So you have to wait a little longer.  Sorry about the waiting game but I am in a similar situation.  I am at 5 weeks and have to wait 2 more weeks to find out a few things...if it's normal, multiple, or molar!  Please pray it's a good, viable pregnancy.

hi ladies i started cramping at work today, so i called my dr they made me an appt for a radiologist. when i went  i was so upset they saw yolk sac measuring 6weeks 2 days but no baby. my last menstrual period was 1/14/09. im suppose to be 7 weeks 6 days by lmp. i had to go dr office after i left there to get blood wrk done and gotta repeat in 48 hrs. then have to go back for u/s tuesday. im so scared.  i hope and pray everything is goin to be alright.

Im confused. I went in for what the doctors thought was my 6-7 week ultrasound to look for a heart beat. The doctors then realized that I was only 4.5 weeks along. I went back a week later to make certain everything was ok. The sac grew and you could see I guess what is the fetal pole but no heart beat yet. I started to spot over the weekend and went in this morning. A midwife who really doesnt know how to do a proper ultrasound did one and all we saw was an empty sac. Is this possible? Can you go from a nice sac with the ring around it and fetal pole to nothing....a black circle with nothing in it anymore? She wasn't certain I am miscarrying but she thinks I will. They drew blood but I have to go back on Wed for more and comparison. Anyone....advice???

according to lmp i should be 9.5 weeks today but went for u/s today they saw a sac that measured 1.9 cm they only saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac.  I was advised by the doctor to be scheduled for a D&C.. On 6-22-09 my hcg was 450,6-24-09 my hcg was 2000, on6-25-o9 it was 3000  on 7-07-09 it  was 14000. I opted to wait because my hcg were high. So be patient  and put it all in God's hand he knows best. I to ha d4 miscarriages and 2 ectopic pregnancy.

Im currently 6wks 2 days. I had an ultrasound which showed i had two placentas and one baby with heart flickering. The second sac was empty. Baby was measuring 5wks 6days. My doc said it could be VTS? Not sure what to think..if its a twin and too soon to tell or if it is truely VTS. I have light brown spotting off and on since the ultrasound. Anyone else experiencing this?? Any info will help! :)

Please respond. I'm 6weeks and 6days pregnant. I had a pelvic and sonogram yesterday. They found no blood during the pelvic n my cervics is close, but when the sonogram was performed they did not find my baby just the sac. I have another sonogram appointment tomorrow n scared 2 death. Can anyone give me any useful advice? I'm. Very worried I had a m/c in 08.

I am 7 weeks ,4 days preg. My hcg count is 45,000 . I had a trans vaginal ultrasound today. dr said the yolk sac is empty.Bu now we should be able to see some fetal growth inside. I am dissapointed :( Does this mean that i m no more preg?

Hey ladies, I am going through something similar. According to all the research I have done... in early pregnancy it is very common not to see a baby in the gest sac and often the gest sac and yolk sac are all thats present for a little while. My friend went for a U/S around 7 weeks and saw the above, around 9 weeks she went for a rescan and they saw a baby. This is generally the reason they dont scan until 12 weeks.

Unfortunately some pregnancys do end in miscarriage but thats about 20% so in the scale of things it's not that high as 80% go on to have healthy pregnancys.

Mild cramping and some spotting is also normal so please don't get too worried about that either ( easier said than done I know).

I went for a U/S scan today and gestation sac and yolk sac were all that was visible... my rescan has been scheduled for 14 days as that's long enough to know one way or another. It's going to be the longest 2 weeks of my life as I mc'd about a year and a half ago.

My only advise would be try not to worry as there is every chance your pregnancy is WAAAAY too early. Remember you don't neccesarily concieve (conceive) or implant exactly 10-13 days from day one of your period.

On 5/6/10, by my LMP I should have been 8 wks but the vaginal ultrasound showed me a 6 weeks 4 days.  The sacs were there but the fetal pole was not nor a heartbeat.  My hcg level was 20,600.  I had to go back today to have them check my hcg level again and it was up to 23,994.  The lady that performed the U/S on 5/6/10 authomatically said that I will miscarry and that one of the sacs was abnormal.  This lady frightened me so bad that I could not eat nor sleep for the past few days.  Does any one have some comforting news for me?  I have to wait until 5/20/10 to have another U/S unless I start to spot or bleed which I have not done either since I got pregnant.

Hi everyone.  Im 6w2d pregnant and had an u/s today.  THe u/s showed a gestastional sac but no embryo.  My doctor told me to come back next week (at 7w2d) to see because it was just too early to tell.  If the u/s says that you are only 6w4d then I dont understand how the lady who did your u/s can predict a miscarriage.  It is too early.  I have to go back next week and something should show up by then.  Dont worry.  Is it possible that you will miscarry?  Yes, it is possible that any woman will miscarry, but judging by your 5/6 u/s cannot determine that. She should not have told you that with so much certainty.  Just remain as calm as you can (i know, Im trying to stay calm too and am stressed) and if you see no bleeding then try to relax.  It is very hard, but if your baby is okay (which Im sure it will be) then you are just causing you and your baby needless stress. Youre two days further along than me and we are in the same boat.  Keep me updated and I'll keep you?  Good luck to you and your baby!

I am now 7 weeks pregnant. I have had 2 early miscarriages a year ago and finally just found out I am pregnant. My DR monitored my HCG levels and everything seemed to be going well. They just about tripled each check. I had very minor brown spotting last Thurs when I woke up in the morning and did not have anymore after that, but I panicked and called the DR. They brought me in for a US and saw a empty sack. I did another HCG test and my numbers were in the 9,000s but the 2nd one in 48 hrs my levels only went up a few hundred. I am very discouraged. Has anyone had a similar experience. I go for another US in a few days.

Hi, I am 8 weeks pregnant today, and go for my second scan tomorrow.  I had my first scan when i was 6 weeks and 4days. & all the u/s tech saw was the gest sac and a yolk sac, but no fetal pole. She said it was fine and that I may be just a few days to early to see the fetal pole. But when i seen my dr. he seemed kinda freaked out. I got bloods done last wk to check my hcg levels which i think are ok, cause dr has not called regarding the results. I am a little worried tho about not seeing a fetal pole. and my pregnancy symptoms seem to be fading. But i have had no cramping or bleeding or anything.. so confused..

I went through the same thing these last two weeks and just wanted to offer my experience in the hope that it might put someone's mind at ease - since I know I was looking for answers.  I went into my doctor for an us to confirm pregnancy three weeks ago and they saw only the gestational sac.  My dr. seemed a little worried but he asked me to come back in one week to find a heartbeat as I was about five weeks at the time.  I went back and we found the gestational sac measured at 7 weeks and there was now a yolk sac but no embryo and no heartbeat - not even a fetal pole.  He said that he was sorry, it was a failed pregnancy.  It was shocking and sad.  He thought I would start miscarrying over the weekend but asked me to come in for an us the next week to see what was going on.  I prepared myself for losing this pregnancy and went in for my us yesterday expecting news that the pregnancy was deteriorating.  There was the baby and a strong, fast heartbeat!  Everything is measuring about three weeks behind where we thought I should be and that week made a huge difference.  
For all of those women out there who are being told they have a blighted ovum and to get a d & c, I would encourage you to wait it out and see if maybe your dates are just off.  It's sad to think that these procedures are being offered so early on and it may be ending a viable pregnancy.  Good luck to all.

I would just wait it out sometimes it is to early to see anything all the way up to 10 week. One thing with hcg levels when they are extremely high it can mean multiples. Identical twins share the same sack. So I would just keep my hope up. Who knows you might just be getting more of a blessing then what you thought.

my name gena i'm going threw the same thing i had an miscarry in april of this year and now pregnant again,and had two U/S and the utrasound tech telling me they dont see no fetal pole they only see the sack and yolk but no baby yet,but they want me to come back friday to do another one. but all along last week they kept telling me that i was 6weeks and when i went for another ultrasound on 11th mon the doctor measure the sack and i look 5weeks and they start me on my insulin and prenantal care anyways so dont give eat health and take ur prenantal pills dont give up. i'm still prayin that they see something,and i'll be pray for u and hope the best for all pregnant women going threw this problem or other different complications.

My hcg levels last Wednesday were 9268. Yesterday they were 26,000. Is that good that they pretty much tripled. I have been bleeding but not bright its been a dark red and sometimes brownish. This is good though that they are tripling because last week i was in hospital and they saw an empty sac with only fetal pole but i am 90 something pounds and was only about 4 weeks give or take they couldnt tell me exactly. So i was thinking i was just too little and too early.

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

My LMP was on 9th Sep 2010 so technically that should make me 7wks 1day today.

I had a u/s yesterday and they couldnt see anything no fetal pole or yolk sac does that mean I'm about to miscarry???

This is my first pregnancy and I am terrified I'm going to lose my baby. My symptoms seemed to have slowed down a bit I mean I've still got tender boobs and feel a little sick but not as badly as I did to begin with. I've had a few pains but no bleeding.

My boyfriend thinks I may not be as far gone as originally thought. I do still have a metallic taste in my mouth though.

I've got another u/s on 8th Nov 2010.

Like I said any advice/help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

hi i went for an early scan last wed 27/10/10 they said sac was quite big  could see yolk sac and possible fetal pole but no heartbeat they think may be missed miscarraige (miscarriage)  have to go for another u/s this wed 3/11/10 should of been 9 wks at 1st scan from lmp but i know i dont ovulate til about 18 -19 days so could of only been6.5wks im terrifyed and have hardly slept i want this baby so bad has anyone had similar? doi need to prepare myself for the worst, i have 2 gorgeous little girls, i went for a scan at6 wks with my 1st and they could see only an empty sac, 2 wks later her little heart was pumping away, i am clinging on to this hope, any thought apprieciated

so I went in yesterday for my 1st u/s.  based on last period i would be 6.5 weeks pg.  The u/s only showed the sac which was empty and was measuring 5 weeks.  This could be true and maybe I'm only 5 wk along?  I just want to know what's going on.  They took blood and I'll have those results back today and go back for another u/s on Monday.  If it's still empty then then it would be blighted ovum.  She told me not to give up hope and it could definitely be too early and maybe only 5 wks.  I keep going back over my dates...what do you think?  We did Femara cycle with extra injectables and TIC

I go back for u/s Monday 12/6...could the calculations really be off??  Because Implantation could have taken place really late??  anywhere between 10/29-11/9?  I got the + HPT on 11/ 10 though?  I am so confused, anyone ...advice please???

I went for and u/s at 4 wk and 6 days due to cramping they did an ultrasound and saw nothing which was normal for so early and my hcg  levels were only at 150. Well i had more cramping at 6wks and 2 days so went to er and had another ultrasound. the dr came back and told me i was miscarrying there was not fetal heartbeat. So my actual OB scheduled me for a d&c 2 days out but i had questions and went to talk to him before. I'm glad I did! He read over the lab report from and there was no fetal pole yet to see a heartbeat and i was actually only 5wks and 4 days so i have another us on 1/12/11 to see how its developing. But hey im braced for the worst and already started to grieve over it due to the stupid Dr at the hospital.

I went for an ultrasound on Thursday the 16/06/2011 due to spotting after sex on the Saturday which was on the 11/06/2011 they said that all they could see was the yolk sac ... Is this good?
The lady that was doing my ultrasound wasn't telling me much, all she told me was that is could be too early and that they might get me to come back in a couple of weeks, So i went to the doc today for my results and they said that i need to go back for another ultrasound in 2 weeks, as all they could see was a yolk sac, then he told me that this pregnancy could end up being enviable and result in a miscarriage, Is there still hope for me???

Hi i am 20 years old and I am 6wks pregnant according to my OB. About 2wks ago they told me i was 8wks then ended up telling me i was 5wks last week they said they see a gestational sac but no baby. They told me to give it another week, and i came in today for another ultra sound and they still see an empty sac so now i have to wait ANOTHER week to check my hgc levels and get another ultra sound but my OB is already apologizing making it seem like ive already had a miscarriage, im thinking i should get another opinion. Reading all these stories about babies apearing at 11wks to12wks is giving me so much hope. I guess all i can do for now is just be patient and pray for the best.

I'm having a similar dilemma, I had my first ultra sound 2weeks ago, they only saw a yolk sac, that was measuring 6w 5d, had my second ultrasoud 3 days ago, they saw an embryo this time as well as a yolk sac but there was no amnion (amniotic fluid I'm assuming) this time however I am measuring 5w 6d :/ the guys that did the scan suggested waiting another 2wks for another scan, but my doctor has already referred me to the hospital for a D&C, I however don't know if I should be listening to my doctor, or getting a second opinion first... Any advice ladies... Also this is my second pregnancy, my first was fine however I had my period every month until I was 6mnths, and I also have negative blood...
