6 weeks and spotting

by charliesmom, Feb 01, 2004 12:00AM
I have never done this before, so I will just tell my story. I have a healthy 1 year old son. During that 1st pregnancy I had continous spotting for about 4 weeks starting at week 5 (the blood went from pink to brown). I went for an ultrasound and saw his heartbeat at 8 wks. My second pregnancy which was conceived in August 2003 unfortunately ended in October 2003 in a miscarriage. I had to go for a D&C. I also spotted lightly with that pregnancy and then it stopped. I then had a tiny amount of red blood and I knew something was wrong. I went to the hospital and there was no heartbeat and the baby had stopped developing at 6 weeks (I should have been over 9 weeks along). I am now 6 wks 1 day and I began to spot again. It is pink to brown and I am scared to death! How common is it to have to back to back miscarriages? Has anyone had spootting/bleeding through all or most of their pregnancies? I am going to go and get my HCG levels checked again. At 4 weeks and 4 days my levels were 2244.

It is not uncommon at all to have pink or brown spotting during pregnancy, especially early on or after intercourse or a pelvic exam. The cause for concern would be cramping or red spotting, both can be indicators of an impending m/c. I would definitely get your levels done (a series of 2 48 hours apart at the same lab is the best gauge) if nothing else it will set your mind at ease.

An us this early can be helpful, but then again it is still pretty early. The closer you get to 7 or even 8 weeks would be better as they can usually see the heartbeat by then.

I had 3 m/c before carrying my son to term. I then had another one last summer before conceiving and am now 24+ weeks with another boy. It is possible to have m/c back to back and carry a normal pg.

Keep your chin up, hopefully this is just that dreaded first trimester spotting and it will go away.

Good luck!!
