6 year old son having tonsils removed.. need help?!?

My son's 6th birthday was yesterday. On Wednesday he is set to have his tonsils removed. I had said a little something about this subject to him & he started to freak out, so I decided that I would wait until last min. to tell him. My question is is there anything that I need to prepare for him going to the hospital (ex: toys)? & what should I have on hand when he comes home from having his tonsils removed (ex: certain foods, meds.)? I am pretty nervous about this, I know he is going to completely freak out when it comes time for me to leave his side @ the hospital. I just want to help make it as comfortable as possible for my little man! I would like to hear your ideas on this subject.
