8 week sonogram festal heart beat but sac was not measuring with estimated weeks

Hi everyone
I am 24 I have a 2year old and have had one prior misscarriage with a  D&E.  We got preg this time with clomid lmp was dec 1
I went in yesterday to have my 4th sonogram and the dr said it was irregularly small but there was a heart beat.  what does this really mean?  I am so frusterated no one would answer my questions...he also said it wasnt round it was kind of squigly.  I called the nurse back later in the day and she said that they dint measure the heartbeat but since there was one is was a good sign and we will see what happens...I hate that answer I want to understand what this means and if there is a chance that it could work out.  I have had no spotting at all during my pregnancy and basicly just until the last 3 days not much heartburn or nausea which they said was a bad sign aswell.  if anyone out there can help explain this to me even if the news is bad please respond...  thank you in advance

First off, sounds like you might have your LMP date a little off, which happens all the time and they just change your due date.  Man, doctors should know everything they tell us we take seriously, they can't just say it looks squiggly and us not expect that means something bad. If you're early, which if you got preg. Dec. 1 that would make you 7-8 weeks (right?) along in your preg., then they all look squiggly in the beginning, my doc. said mine looked like a chewed up piece of gum at 9 weeks, thanks doc... Only 50% of all women have MS/nausea and heartburn during pregnancy.  Morning sickness and nausea are not good indicators of anything, don't fret.  Although having these symptoms usually means everything is going well, not having them doesn't mean it's going bad.  If they saw a heartbeat, you're doing well.  That's all that matters.  Keep getting checked and call the doc. if anything starts worrying you.  Try not to take everything they say seriously, sometimes not saying anything is the best thing and some doctors aren't aware of all they say (they say way too much).  Hang in there and have a healthy 9 months!

I know it can go either way but here is my story.

I went in at 8 weeks for a sono and the baby had a heartbeat but the sac measured way too small and i was told I would probably miscarry. I waited to miscarry for the next few weeks and went back for a sono at 13 weeks and the sac measured perfectly and I am now 32 weeks along with a healthy pregnancy. Sometimes early on everything is so small that they can say scary things that just aren't true. Hopefully this is the case with you too. I read many negative things on the internet when researching my problem and of course almost all of it is negative. Not near as many people go to the internet when things are going well.

thank you this is very comforting I have stopped looking around the internet for advice everything I found was negative I am glad I have come accross this website it is always a relief to hear from other women that understand what your going through. I go back on Friday for another sonogram so hopefully all will work out.

Did he say what week you were measuring in?

We are the same amount of pregnant (if that's a way to put it).  My last period was December 1st.  I had a scan done this past Monday.  Based of LMP, I should have been 7 weeks 4 days however the baby measured 6 weeks 5 days.  I'm measuring a week behind what I thought I should be.  I know when I had sex in December so I'm guessing the little swimmers just kind of hung out a bit and my ovulation was a few days late.

I suppose you could say the baby looked squiggly (don't really get that comment).  It really didn't look like much of anything.  Even like less of anything in the little picture they let me keep.

They said the heartbeat was strong but didn't measure it either.  I have had zero morning sickness or heartburn with this pregnancy, just a little breast tenderness.  I have had two miscarriages in the past year.  I was sick as a dog with both of those.  I have two children and was not sick with either one of them either.  For me, the no morning sickness appears to be a good sign.

Try to stay calm.  I know it's very difficult when they are being less then clear.

Good Luck,  I really hope this pregnancy goes very well for you.

Im going through almost the same thing

I went to the doc yesterday and he used a Dopler thing and couln'd hear the heart beat (im 12 weeks)  so he did the sonagram and we saw the pic of the baby and it did grow from the last time i saw it (9 weeks) and he said it was moving around so it was fine.  But i was thinking if he was putin pressure on my stomach wouldn't it have moved anyway?

The doctor said I was 5 days behind and I looked at my file as I was walking to the check out and it said irregularly small sac I guess the sac is measuring 7wks 4 days and the baby was measuring 6weeks 1 day...that seemed about right to me but I got that from reading something I wasnt supposed to. all the doctor said was we will have to wait and see....I hope it works out for all of us going through this!

U/S measurements this early in the pregnancy are very accurate.  The most likely explaination is miscalculation of your LMP during the initial visit.

I wouldnt worry too awful much about the dates. My best friend has been doing ob u/s for 10 years and she said that this early, the u/s can be anywhere from 3-5 days off and things are still fine. Mine was measuring 4 days off early on and now I am measuring right on at 7 weeks and 4 days. just give it some time. On u/s my ges sac isnt round either. It actually looks like a bean or moon shape... the Dr said it was perfect, soooo... I wouldnt worry!

I'm not concerned this pregnancy either.  I feel ok about it.  Things looked good to me even though the dates were off a bit.  I think that we will all be fine.
