8 weeks but no embryo

8 weeks but no embryo

Hi there everyone. The past few days have undoubtedly been the worst ever in my life and reading some of the posts on this site have managed to give me some hope but I'm really scared. I had an ultrasound on Monday when I should have been about 7 1/2 weeks but the u/s showed just a gestational sac and yolk sac with no embryo but a slight heartbeat (this bit didnt make sense - how could they not see an embryo but see a heartbeat?) They estimated I should have been about 5 1/2 weeks but my HCG levels the same day were 31k which put me at around 8 weeks as I had thought. Did another blood test on Thursday and levels had gone up only marginally to 39k. Was advised another u/s for Friday which again showed only the gestational sac and yolk sac but no embryo or heartbeat. Have another blood test on Monday to see what the levels are doing. My doc is almost certain its going to be a miscarriage and has already started treating it like one. Its my first pregnancy and one which we were really looking forward to so the last few days have been extremely torturous. Has anyone else gone through a similar situation but gone on to have a normal pregnancy? Please help and pray for us...

You poor thing..I have another similar situation they only saw a gestation sac and I was least 6.5 weeks judging from what they told me on the first scan, now they say the sac was measuring 4 weeks. My HCG is now 11300. I have another scan monday. Have they taken your blood? Hang on in there, there is a web site that I have been visiting after someone on here gave me the address its misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com. There are lots of stories on there where they couldn't see embryo or HB later than you are that turned out ok...Hoping everything is ok xxx

If they are saying that it is the size of someone at 5 and a half weeks it is possible it is not visible yet. Usually you cannot see the embryo until about 7-8 weeks on an ultra sound. Then again I don't think they can hear a heart beat at just 5 weeks, atleast that is what I have read many times. I'm stumped.

Thanks so much for your posts guys. I spoke to my aunt who's a gynaec yesterday and she seemed shocked that the doc is making such conclusions so early. According to her if you've not had very regular 28 day cycles, its very difficult to correctly estimate how far out you are in your pregnancy. She was saying that this trend of asking for u/s so early has only started these days, when she had her kids they wouldnt even see you before 12 weeks. Basically, by then, you've given your body and baby a chance and if its not meant to be, nature takes it course. What she stressed on was that "stress and worry" are the most harmful factors in a pregnancy so just stay positive. It will surely work out if its meant to be, otherwise it just wasnt God's will...so chin up girls, I'm praying for all of us...please keep me posted on how you guys are going.

I am in the same boat as well. This pregnancy is a surprise (my baby will be 18) as my last pregnancy was 7 yrs ago and it ended in a m/c at 15 weeks...after 2 previous m/c's several years before that. I went for an u/s on Thursday only to find a gestational sac, a yolk sac and no heartbeat.  She mentioned nothing about a fetus, and I did not see one (though I am not really good at finding things in those).  I am supposed to be at about 6.5 weeks..so she scheduled another u/s for this coming Friday as I may have ovulated a few days later she said. She did find ovarian cysts and a fibriod but did not appear concerned about those. They sent me home with progesterone supp. bid. I am really nervous that this another m/c.

Yes, they've checked my HCG levels twice. Once on Monday when it was 31,000 odd and Thursday when it was 39,000 odd. Supposedly it should have doubled. Am scheduled for another one tomorrow and my doc seems fairly confident that its going to go down which is just driving me NUTS! Its soooo annoying that they dont even want to give this a chance....

Try to stay positive until you see the next us.  I hope you both get the miracle you are looking for.

Hi girls
My situation is somwhat like some of you. I am supposely 8 weeks pregnant. At 5 weeks the Dr could not see any sac in the uterus. At six weeks i had some brown spotting and the DR did see a sac. Yesterday I went for another visit the sac had grown in size but the Dr could not clearly define an embryo all he could spot was some white little dots. So he said he wanted to give it time to see if that what dot was what was going to develop into an embryo. He said that maybe I was not really at 8 weeks maybe I was at 6 or seven weeks. If that's the case is there a chance that an embryo will develop. Did any of you did not have an embryo at seven weeks but later on yes? I had a miscarriage before and i am just worried that this might be another one. Thanks guys.
