A few things to discuss

by mel8, Apr 10, 2005 12:00AM
Hey ladies!
I have a few things that I am wondering about so I thought I would put them all together and do a post and it will probably turn into an open forum discussing my concerns so here goes....

1)  I made a comment the other day about always feeling tired even when I have had a full nights sleep, well somebody made a comment that maybe I wasn't eating enough for a breastfeeding mu.  Well I probably aren't, is there certain foods I should be eating and is there a recommended amount of meals to have in 24 hours?  Also I tend to feel more tired after eating, could I be eating too many big meals...is it better to snack?

2)  My ds Josh (nearly 5 months) seems to always be chucking up!!!  Somedays more than others, sometimes I don't like leting people hold him when we go out because I just know that he is going to make a mess all over them!!!  Is there a known reason for this?  I have been told that breast fed babies are more prone to do this than bottle fed.

3) I can't actually remember topic number 3 at the moment so I will add that later when I think of it.

thanx for listening!

You are supposed to add 300 calories to your daily intake......at least that is what my OB told me as far as a breastfeeding mother goes.....
But to be honest.......you are going to be tired. Baby takes alot out of you when breastfeeding and then you are up chasing baby around all day and doing the housework and keeping the rest of the family happy.......no wonder we are so tired all the time.....lol

As for the spitting up......my 10 month old (knock on wood) has never spit up........he did projectile vomit 2 or 3 times but nothing more than that. He is breastfed.
But my 10 year old........always spit up. He was not breastfed. They changed his formula and changed it and changed it. Finally soy formula worked best although he still spit up some.

Sorry I can't be of more help!!

As a breastfeeding mom ,I try to eat 4 or 5 smaller meals a day, like for breakfast oatmeal, then a few hours later maybe a couple pieces of wheat toast, then a few hours later a granola bar and some fruit, then a normal dinner, then sometimes a light snack before bed.I've found i'm a lot more hungry breastfeeding, even more than when I was pregnant. As for the spitting up,maybe it's something that your eating? Mine spits up when i eat anything with tomato sauce,so I've had to cut out spagetti, lasagna, mexican food, anything thats tomato based..

I also think at the start of a new baby you are so excited , you are up for feedings every 2,3 hours  but in time it just catches up with you.. All of a sudden Cody is sleeping threw most nights but I still wake up because Im use to getting up today I was awake at 4:45 am and just stayed up started laundry now at 11.30 Im ready for a nap.

Mel-

1.  I know there is a certain amount of calories a breast fed mommy is to have in order to keep up her production Im sure some of the girls here would know I dont breastfeed myself.
Also if your tired after big meals...Did you have gestational diabetes??? Been tested for.... I know when I had it  they told me that  one sign of it was being tired after meals because you are taking in too much  at once and your insulin cant keep up-(just a thought)

2.  If your breastfeeding it wouldnt be the milk causing Josh to  throw up..(like formula allergies)  I know you have him on foods now  have you noticed this since you started him on foods??? How does he eat?? Is he a piggy and taking too much at a time????  How about his bowel movements (sorry ) anything funny with that???

Kids!!!!!.....

I can't really address the up chucking thing but when my DS was 3 months old I was so exhausted.  I mean way beyond normal exhaustion, turned out I tested positive for Epstein Barr Virus. Nothing too serious but it sure explained alot.

My son is 8 months old and he spits up all the time.  Ever since he was born he would do that.  I breastfed him for a while and then we tried different formulas but he spit up with everything.  The dr says he will just grow out of it.  As long as he does not project vomit then there is nothing to worry about (never does that).  Even if you read about it on the net or in your books, they all say that some babies just spit up constantly and they will one day grow out of it.  I make sure people know that he may have an accident on them but they do not seem to care one bit.  Hope this helps.

Breastfeeding moms generally need 2500 calories and lots of water to breastfeed successfully (ie enough calories for baby and for mom's energy)

As far as the spitting up, sounds like GERD (gastro-esophogeal reflux disease) basically plain ol' reflux. Most babies will outgrow it, mine just started really spitting up alot in the last few months so we have him on Zantac now. My first was a spitter from birth and was on Zantac until he was about 6 months. Whereas my youngest didn't really start spitting up alot until after 6 months, lol!

My advice is burp frequently, keep breastfeeding, and if he seems too miserable, consult the pediatrician and see if Zantac is a good option.

Once again thanx for your input ladies!  I don't know if it is just me worrying or if there is actually something wrong with me, my eyes just feel heavy all the time.   Guess I will just see how I go over the next couple of weeks, if no improvement I might head off to the doctors again.
