Abnormal Ultrasound - Fetal Gall Stone

by fetalquestion, Apr 22, 2003 12:00AM
My husband and I just received word that the ultrasound of our unborn baby shows it might have a gall stone. The fetus is 19 weeks and 5 days and is normal in every other way. They've scheduled another ultrasound but it's not for 4 weeks. Why the wait? Are there things I should be looking for in the interim? What are treatment options (if any) if it comes back true and the baby does still show a stone at 23 weeks?

Boy, that's a new one!  Bear in mind I have only worked in high risk OB for 23 years, but I have never heard of such a thing, let alone such a thing diagnosed at only 19 weeks of gest!

I am assuming they want to wait to confirm this highly unusual condition until the baby is a bit bigger.  There is nothing that could or would be done in the meantime.  It's not like there is any medical or surgical treatment for this at 19 weeks of gest.

If I had to guess, in 4 weeks they will decide there is not or never was a gallstone.  Hopefully not, anyway.  Let us know!

Thought I'd provide an update.  I've spoken with a couple doctors today, including my own.  Yes, in fact he did find an area by the liver and gallbladder that looks like it has an abnormal calcium deposit.  The plan is to retest in 4 weeks and if its still there, repeat the test at 28 weeks.  The specialist I spoke with said it can't truly be identified as such until 28 weeks.  If it is there at that point, however, they'd recommend a more detailed screening of the fetus.  Specifically, they'd be looking for calcium deposits in other areas.  So - for now it's a wait and see game.  There's no immediate risk, however, to either me or the fetus.
