Abnormally low progesterone level

by Laura A, Jul 25, 2004 12:00AM
My results from my last progesterone test were 0.7. I know that this is really low, I also have very irregular cycles (40+ days).
I am 29 and would like to get pregnant... can natural progesterone therapy help me or will I have to use synthetic progesterone? I have terrible PMS and am wondering if I will ever get pregnant!!

Was this progesterone level done before or after you should have ovulated, that would make a difference. Maybe you are not ovulating, then you would also need something like Clomid. If your cycles are long and irregular then it is highly suspicious that you may not be ovulating. I would definitely see an OBGYN doctor and discuss with them what may be going on with you. There may be a connection between your painful periods, long cycles, and possibly you are not ovulating. I think you should make an appt ASAP, NOT wait and try to get pregnant, you probably will have trouble. The sooner you go in and explain your situation, the sooner you will get help and get pregnant, which I totally think is possible, so don't give up! I've been having long irregular cycles for 8 months now, ever since I had a miscarriage last Nov. I thought they might straighten out with time, but they haven't and I just started going in for appts, I wish I would have gone in a long time ago. It took about a month to get in to see my doctor. I hope yours will be able to see you sooner. Good luck and keep us posted. There are a few of us here TTC (trying to conceive) so anytime you need support or advice, this is a good spot.

Bad PMS is related to low progesterone levels.  You need to check it 7 days past ovulation or LH surge to see what your level is.  I think you need to be a 10 for ovulation.  If not there are progesterone treatments.  Most likely you will be put on clomid and progesterone supplements.

Hi new to the site. My name is Shelly, and I am also 29. My husband and I started trying in Febuary but no such luck. Every time I test my progesterone level it is significantly low. Like 0.57 extremely low. I have taken clomid since Febuary, and my doctor does believe I ovulated on my own in April but that is the only month and no I did not get pregnant. I am frustrated and disappointed but not giving up. I also found out I was hypothyroidism and that could play a huge role in my infertility problem. I know that God will deliver my desires and you all need to feel the same. God only lets us handle what we can he never said our struggles would be easy his weren't. Faith, love, and luck all go together. I just finished my last treatment of clomid on the 29th and it was 150 mg hopefully it happens or I go to a different Dr. a specialist. Stay hopeful and strong it will happen for us all I hope and pray.
Sincerely your new friend in the journey,
Shelly

Hi there. I'm new to the forum as well. I hear you all talking about checking progesteron levels - can you do this from home? or do you have to have this done at the doctors/lab etc.?

Just diagnosed with bicornuate uterus and have an upcoming HSG in September to find out more.

Hello everyone,
I am new to this site.  I also have been having problems with infertility & low progesterone levels.  My progesterone levels the past 4 months have ranged from 0.7 to 1.0.  I have been on Clomid for 4 months with my last dose being 150 mg this month.  Still no luck.  Ovulation kits never were positive.  My periods are always irregular and I have to take Provera to even have a period.  The new plan for me starting this month is to take the Provera and they have started me on Glucophage (used to treat diabetes) which they have said they have had good results in woman from taking it.  It has an effect on the insulin that your body produces which in turn has an effect on the other hormones in your body.  They also have advised me to be on a low carb diet.  So hopefully with all of this combined something good will come out of it.  Hope all of your dreams come true and look forward to reading more about our journeys.

I am new here and am just thankful, in an odd sort of way, to see that I am not the only one with dreadfully low progesterone.  I have been trying to get pregnant for over a year.  I have been charting with a nurse with the Natural Family Planning or Creighton Model-- which has taught me more about my body than I ever dreamed of.  Through this charting, and observations of mucous, had determined I had low progesterone. I went throught a whole series of tests; have been on glucophage; Novarel for 2 months and prometrium post peak day;  and took a test and the results were positive.  HCG was 18.5 and progesterone was a whopping 0.6 on day 17 after peak day.  HCG then dropped the next day to 12.7-- began cramping and bleeding.  Now am to see my doctor again in a few days--- my husband and I talked about how much do we keep going.  When I get to the point of heartbreak, I say I quit; then after a few days, it passes, and I'm ready to try anything again--- it's driving me crazy.  I know the GOod Lord is to only give you what you can handle; but he is trusting me way too much.  I am 35 years old-- desperately wanting my own pregnancy and child..... anyone had any success after such low progesterone levels?

Hi Everyone, I happened to come across this site looking for answers to my (still) low progesterone levels, I have Poly Cystic Ovaries, However in reading your comments I just wanted to let you know, not to give up hope, I am now 41 and tried to get pregnant for 10 years and even though I wasnt ovulating etc etc it happened (twice) and my girls are now 10 and 12

I used Clomid, and blood tests then decided to do it by myself by monitoring my cycle and losing weight, yes I know we hate to hear it but it does make a difference,

SO it can happen even though we have mixed up cycles just become aware of your body, the way it changes during cycles and

Have fun trying

Love
Aurora
