Acid Reflux--Prevacid

Acid Reflux--Prevacid

My daughter has acid reflux and is on prevacid and doing much better. My question is the handout with from the pharmacy says to give it 30 min before eating. Which I am finding very hard! She breastfeeds and likes to eat often. Also she wakes up very hungry so I feel mean giving her the prevacid and making her wait 30 min to eat, she would probably scream the whole time. I asked my doc at her 2 month visit and he suggested giving it to her an hour after she eats. But after she nurses for 30 min and then about 30 min later she is ready to sleep again. Or the nurse suggested to give it to her in her sleep, but this is impossible. I have a hard enough time getting her to go to sleep.I have to give her prevacid 2 times a day now! I know this sounds confusing, but I am going crazy. Please give any advice! Wondering how other parents have accomplished this. Thanks!

I know what you're going through.  Unfortunately, as helpful as Prevacid is, it's a pain in the behind to stick to this 30 minutes before eating routine.  I faced the same problem and we had to do it b/c it's not effective any other way!  DD would scream wanting to eat and sometimes I'd give in and breastfeed her before 30 minutes were up.  My suggestion is, give her the med and try to preoccupy her somehow.  I'd change DD's diaper.  I'd walk around the apartment with her pretending to talk to everything we see.  I sounded like a nut job but sometimes that did the trick and sometimes she wouldn't care less and scream for food.  Trust me, it gets so much easier as she grows up.  DD's almost a year and she's still on 2 doses a day but she's so much better at waiting out those 30 minutes.  I was also given the advice to give it to her while she sleeps but that'd wake her right up (DD wakes up at the slightest move or sound).  Now that I think about it, it was nearly impossible but unfortunately, that's the only way to do it.  I hope others can give you a better piece of advice.

Hi.. Honey I feel your pain! I lost weight due to the stress of her acid reflux.  She would gag in the middle of the night and struggle to breath. It was very scary.
My daughter was on Zantac but it said nothing about using it before meals. I just gave it to her twice a day.  Unfortunately, it didnt really seem to help her. For her 2 month shots, I had to give her tylenol and so, I stopped the zantac because I didnt want to put all these med into her.  Fortunately, she got better on her own.  I also started to keep her upright for about 30 mins after feedings and burped her for a looooonng time. This seemed to help.  Sorry If I wasnt much help for you but I do you wish you and your little one the best of luck. I know its hard. :(
