Advice on reflux of 2 month old

My DD is 2 mo's olkd and she has reflux (GERD). She spits up alot and sometimes when eating, she comes off the breast or bottle after a few minutes at a time crying. I went to the pediatrician and he had me add a little cereal to her breasmilk when I bottle fed. I understand from many sites this does not work and to be honest, we feel it is alittle earlier. I am looking for anyone else who had this problem with their baby and what was done for them. I do not want to pur her on Reglan as we have heard the risks outweigh the benefits. She is gaining weight and for the most part a happy baby except when her reflux is acting up (more at night).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Keep the cereal out of the bottle, you are right to go with your gut on that. Sometimes things like keeping her upright for 20 minutes after eating and burping frequently help. Avoid overfeeding as well. Chances are it is more of an issue with her GI tract still maturing rather than GERD. The valve at the top of the stomach is still learning to function correctly and that leads to a lot of babies spitting up, even projectile vomitting. All three of my boys would soak burp rags with the amount that came out of them. I tried the meds with Jonathan to no avail. With all three it was simply a matter of them outgrowing it around 6 mos.

Good luck. As long as she is gaining and is generally happy, I am guessing she will also be one who outgrows it.

hi.my son has severe reflux and he was put on zantac and it never helped.we also tried reglan and it was aweful for my son, the side effects where terrible.my son was put on prevacid and after a week he was a different baby.he still spits up but the prevacid controls the acid production.I don't think that every baby needs medication but in my sons case he did.I know that without prevacid my son would be miserable.I hope this helps.

DD was diagnosed with reflux at 3 months (after 1 1/2 months of pure hell!!).  She was put on Prevacid after trying Axid and Zantac.  A few things I can suggest to you:
1) join www.infantreflux.org  They have great forums filled with mommies whose children are going through the same thing.  DD's almost 15 months and I'm still on it b/c I got the greatest advice from those women on the subject and made some great friends
2) Dd's ped also suggested rice cereal in the bottle and it did absolutely NOTHING.  I tried it for a few days and it constipated her like crazy making her EVEN MORE miserable
3) I read up a lot on Reglan and was too scared to give it to DD.  The side effects are scary!
4) Try to burp your DD as often as possible and get Dr. Brown's bottles if you can.  They worked for us (even though they did not eliminate gas completely, they did decrease it somewhat)
5) i understand you're hesitant to give your DD any meds (trust me, so was I and still am not too happy about it) but it's really not about her gaining weight.  You don't really want the acid damaging her esophagus.  It's an unpleasant feeling.  In severe cases, infants can develop feeding aversions.
I really hope you find relief for your little one.  Check out the website.  It has tons of info on reflux in infants.

I wanted to thank everyone for their comments and advice. I am not using the cereal and will speak to the doctor about Zantac and Prevacid. It is nice to know that other babies have suffered through this and have grown out of it.
