After Plan B emergency contraception...

After Plan B emergency contraception...

I had sex in March and the condom failed. I took Plan B the next day I think. I then started bleeding within a couple days after the second pill. I don't know if this was my period or not. Now, I haven't had another period since and I took a pregnancy test which came up negative. Is this normal after taking Plan B. Sometimes I notice my period might seem a little late, but this startles me.

Sorry, let me correct something. It was in April, not March.

Thanks

Another thing I was wondering that might affect my cycle-
I was a smoker. With any birth control, there is a risk when smoking, so I stopped on the same day I started the Plan B. And I used this as a good time to quit smoking altogether. Plus, I have been taking Xanax on and off. Can smoking cessation or xanax influence the menstrual cycle?
I already have 2 kids and really I'm about to pass out thinking I might be pregnant again- having anxiety attacks and feel like fainting. I don't want any more babies, at least at this time. Maybe I'll wait another 5 years or decade for more, but no we can't handle any more children right now. It was so easy how I got pregnant with my second child, so I'm terrified this might be the case again.
Thanks

Since April- which is a long time since last period or bleeding, I figured if I was pregnant, it would definitely show up at this time. Being as it is about 1 1/2 - 2 whole months since. Took the pregnancy test today, but with a negative result. Is it possible I can have an ectopic pregnancy which wouldn't show up on test?

It's unlikely you are pregnant this long after the episode, but of course, nothing is impossible.  False negatives are more common than false positive pregnancy tests.

If you are really worried, I'd get a blood test at the doctor.  You can run the irregular bleeding by him/her, too.

Quitting smoking is always a good idea, but I don't think either it nor Xanax would affect your cycles.  Sometimes you just have a couple of months where things are out of whack, especially if you are freaking out about possible pregnancy.

So go get a blood test, and then you can relax.  If you aren't on a good, reliable form of contraception, get on one until you are ready for another baby.

Hope things work out well for you.

I've mentioned this to lots of people with late periods and neg. HPTs; I did not have my period for three months.  I found out I was pregnant by HPT about a week before my doctor appointment to find out why.  However, I was only JUSt pregnant, so my body 'skipped' a couple months worth of periods for no apparent reasons.  Quitting smoking may have caused stress to your system.  There are lots of reasons why people don't get their period for a month or two.  I agree that it is alarming, but most doctors won't look into it too much unless it happens for more than a few months.  Still talk to your doc if you're concerned...

Hi. Thanks so much for your replies.

I would think that maybe the reason for a higher amount of false negatives is because maybe a lot of women take the test too soon? I don't know. I'm scared to take the second test, which I might take tomorrow.
I'm afraid to try a new contraceptive method because of so many bad side-effects I hear about, but was thinking of an IUD. It seems nothing is even near 100% though, so I'd have to use 2 forms of protection to make sure I don't get pregnant.

Cajun, thanks. Yes it was very hard to quit smoking this time around. Much harder than the past.
Did your doc ever explain any reason why women sometimes are behind on their period for that long?

Thanks

Lots of women seem to get IUDs and are very happy with them.  I personally don't like the idea of something like that in my body but I think it just depends on what you can tolerate and what you prefer.

I've looked up information on why women somtimes just don't get their period and there really isn't a good reason.  It just happens.  It's only when it happens for more than three cycles that doctors get concerned and start looking at medical reasons (lacking certain horomones, etc...).

A friend just got her IUD changed the other day and she ended up in the hospital for 5 days because of an infection. Supposedly you are to be put on antibiotics for those procedures, but she wasn't.

Well I'm still in the same boat I was 10 days ago. I wanted to update that I took a second at home pregnancy test last night and it came up negative again.  So now, It has been 66 days since my contraceptive failure and about 63 days since the start of my period(or bleeding- if not my period.) after taking the emergency contraceptive pill.
I have enough stress in my life right now because we are trying to sell our home, raising two kids etc, I don't need anymore! I'm seriously thinking about having my tubes tied If I'm not pregnant, cause I don't want to go through this again. Am I pregnant or not? If not, I just want to get my damn period already and get this behind me.
