Allergies

Dose anyone Know if it is safe to take Robitussin & Claritin while PG? I don't know if I am but there is a slight chance. I had a M/C in Feb. with a D&C in March & I just want to be sure I do everything possible for a healthy preg!

My doctor has allowed me to take claritan or generic claritan (Loratadine)

Yes, you can.  I take Zertac for allergies.

i just asked my doc. and Claritan is ok just not claritan-D, sudifed in the red box is ok and so is benedrel

I AM ALLOWED TO TAKE Robitussin DM only but that is for chest conjestions only i think.

When I was pregnant the doctors told me to stop the claritan right away and it was the off brand loradine too.  Benedryl is ok but I try and suffer as much as I could before taking anything.  Look up the drug information online and it should tell you how it effects the fetus.

BRAND NAME: Claritin, Claritin RediTabs, Alavert
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Loratadine is a long-acting antihistamine. Histamine is a chemical that causes many of the signs that are part of allergic reactions, for example, swelling of tissues. Histamine is released from histamine-storing cells (mast cells) and attaches to other cells that have receptors for histamine. The attachment of the histamine to the receptors causes the cell to be "activated," releasing other chemicals which produce the effects that we associate with allergy. Loratadine blocks one type of receptor for histamine (the H1 receptor) and thus prevents activation of cells by histamine. Unlike most other antihistamines, loratadine does not enter the brain from the blood and, therefore, does not cause drowsiness.

PREPARATIONS: Loratadine tablets (white-to-off-white): 10 mg; Claritin RediTabs are rapidly disintegrating tablets that are round, white-to-off-white, and mint flavored containing 10 mg loratadine. Loratadine also is available as a syrup. The nonprescription form of loratadine, Alavert, is available as a 10 mg tablet.
