Alternatives for treating ear infections with discharge in babies/ toddlers

by MotherlyLove, Sep 15, 2004 12:00AM
My baby (18 months) who is in a creche/ baby care environment has had ear infections continuously, resulting in adenoid removal and insertion of grommets. Thereafter he has had a treatment of intravenous antibiotics (rocephin) and has been re-infected again. They can become resistant to this antibiotic and thereafter there is no other alternative as it is the "super" antibiotic for this type of infection. Is there any other alternative (with or without antibiotics) to treating this illness? How long can the baby remain untreated before it becomes critical? Can his immune system fight this infection? Are there success stories relating to my situation where antibiotics was not considered? Please help as I do not want to endure seeing my baby suffer an intravenous treatment again.

I know they can do rocephin in injections.  They do two in the front thigh then the next dose would be two in the but.  It's a lillt less traumatic than an I.V.  My dd had to have the injections because she was dehydrated and they could not get an I.V.

Hello,
I would think that Collodial silver would help. I use it on myself and my children and have used it for ear infections before with success. But if you try it make sure that you heat it a little so that it is not cold to the ear which will cause pain. I learned this on my own ear thankfully. Helen

as far as children getting ear infections that young...you might try more along the lines of helping your child prevent them to begin with.....
if they already took his adnoids and put tubes in his ears then i would suggest when he does get a cold to ask the doctor for permission to give an expectorant instead of decongestant?antihistamine.. the expectorant will help the sinuses drain during the day when he is upright rather than at night when he is laying down and the only place the fluid had to go is into the ears...the other thing you could try is to elevate the head of his bed a little, this will help with the night time pain and help the fluid try to get flowing in the right direction.

i had recurring ear infections like these when i was a kid and let me tell you they are VERY painful.  i too became imune to antibiotics by the time they figured out that my sinuses were not mapped right and everything drained straight into my ears.

good luck to you and i hope your little one feels better soon.

I used Colloidal Silver on my daughter's eye infection.  It helped to clear it up along with prayer.  (-:  It is amazing stuff.  It used to be used in the past in place of antibiotics.  It is very expensive, but worth it.  Antibiotics are much cheaper for manufacturing companies but not as healthy.  You can find it at any health food store.
