Amino - to go for it or not????

Amino - to go for it or not????

Hey everyone..Happy Easter!!
My previous preg ended in a MC @ 22 weeks with the baby having trisomy 16.
I am preg again and have to decide whether or not i opt for an amnio???My triple test is good...n i go for my US next week before deciding.
I am confused as during my last preg my Level 2 US was perfectly normal and still the baby had a trisomy 16.My doc thinks only way to be sure is an amnio as these screening test would only detect trisomy 21/13.
Though they say trisomy 16 is pure bad luck....i dunno what to do...i m tensed every moment that something might go wrong this time too....i just can't seem to enjoy my preg.
What do u guys think i should go?????????????Go for Amnio or just leave it in god's hands?

Would the amnio give you more knowledge as far as what is happening or would it sway a decision to terminate a pregnancy? Either way, I would not risk an amnio only because I know of those who had false results or who had good results and still worried anyway. I would do the research and become informed but I also would pray about it and let it be in His hands. There is a slight risk of m/c with an amnio, thus the reason I have always tried to avoid it, even when my doc wanted me to get one, it turned out the baby was fine.

I do not know if this will help, but I will offer this information anyhow.  I'm 8w 3d and 40 years old and I have no family history of genetic defects.  I also have two healthy children.  My OB has still recommend genectic testing due to my age, but he suggested CVS (Chronic Villus Sampling).  This can be done at 12 wk vs. 16 weeks.  He thought doing it sooner would give us more time to think of our decision to terminate or plan for a child who may be disabled.  If termination is the choice it would be done in the early part of the second trimester.  The problem I have with this is there is a slight increase of misccarriage but the test is 99.9% accurate.

Personally, I would go for the amnio or CVS test.

I have been given the choice for all those tests they want you to do, but have declined each time, for us there is no choice Gods is in control of my life and we deal with what he gives us, try not to worry to much, I know that is hard to do but sometimes the test are wrong then we make decisions based on those tests and can regret it later, the choice is yours together to make just be sure this is something you can live with.

I'm 42 and at 6 weeks, 2 days I was told that I was miscarrying and then it was confirmed via a second transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks (both u/s showed only an empty gestational sac).  I refused both a D&C and Cytotec.  At 9 weeks, 5 days I had another ultrasound because I had not yet started to bleed or cramp.  The technician looked confused, locked eyes with me, flipped a switch, and I heard my baby's heartbeat.  There she was on the screen--measuring exactly right for her gestational age.

While I was SO happy, I was also an emotion wreck, crying all the time and worrying and wondering why they couldn't see her earlier.  I had an amnio.  I wasn't a candidate for CVS because my perinatal specialist goes transabdominally for both (he believes that since you can't sterilize the cervix, going through the abdomen poses less of a threat of infection) and my placenta was behind my uterus and inaccessible through my abdomen.

I was scared to have the amnio, but my ob/gyn told me to ask the doctor performing the amnio what his/her personal statistics are--mine had done over 7,000 in his 28 years of doing them almost daily, with an extremely low loss rate, so I felt better about it.

All was well with the procedure and baby and she is now 6 weeks and 3 days old and absolutley beautiful.  I have to say that having the amnio made it possible for me to enjoy the rest of my pregnancy.  Like I said, I was a total mess having been told I was miscarrying and waiting for weeks for it to happen.

Good luck with your decision--it truly is a personal one and one that only you can make.

Can you tell me how they knew the baby had Trisomy 16?  I tested for it and everything was fine and I went in for the level 2 and we saw kidneys, liver, four chambers of the heart, and the spine...should I still worry?  I am 18 weeks 2 days.

I think you need to decided what you would do if.... If you are surely going to go through with the pregnancy regardless of the results, then why test, as the previous poster said.
That being said just so you know, the risk of a miscarriage from an amnio is really really small.  Just make sure it's something your dr. has done many times before.
I had one done because they found an early marker for CF and although all blood work came up negative and I was not a carrier I did it anyway.
It wasn't that bad and I felt a lot better afterwards.
Good luck to you whatever you decide!

Hi,
During my last preg, everything was okie..i had my triple screen done...level 2 US everything was perfect and suddenly one day i could not feel my baby move...so just landed at the hospital to hear the baby's HB...my gynec tried finding one but she couldn't so she opted for an US which showed the baby had passed away. There was no HB.
There is no other way of finding trisomy 16 other than amnio...n u shouldn't worry as its pure bad luck...does not happen to everyone..i m scared cauz i have already gone thru it.
I m sure everything is fine with ur baby:))Don't worry....or maybe u can chat with ur caretaker.

From what I understand, "trisomy" just means that there are three of a particular chromosome instead of the normal number of 2.  The number that follows the word trisomy is the number of the specific chromosome that is tripled (i.e., in trisomy 21, there are three number 21 chromosomes instead of two).

I would do the amnio. I had one with my son. I went to the hospital and my obgyn was the one who did it. They monitored my son and me while they did it. It is a little uncomfortable but afterwards I was fine. I am now 14weeks and I am going to have the quad screen to check for birth defects and I will also have a sono. I will pray that everything goes well with your decision.
