Amoxicillin during pregnacy

Amoxicillin during pregnacy

I took my daughter to urgent care last night and the doctor gave her Amoxicillin for a bad infection she's got. The doctor looked it up in her obgyn book first. My daughter was afraid to take it so I called the ob clinic this morning and talked to the nurse there who said they give Amoxicillin to to their patients and it should be fine especially after the first trimester. She's 14 weeks so she's just starting her second trimester. I really wanted to talk to an ob doctor but it's like pulling teeth to get one to call me back. I've tried twice to have one call me so I haven't been too happy about that.
My daughter is trying to be so careful. She didn't even want to take Tylenol but she was running a slight temperature since yesterday (100 degrees) so I told her she needs to take the Tylenol.
She's been in a lot of pain from the infection but was afraid to take the Amoxicillin. I've heard its safe in pregnancies too and believe that's what I took for an ear infection with my first child.

She's trying so much to be healthy and careful and has really worried about this baby and what's ok or not ok but I know she needs to take care of herself too.
Is there any reassurance anyone can give her?

Hi,

I have 3 children and took Amoxicilin during my third pregnancy. My daughter didn't have any side-affects from the medicine.

I was like your daughter though during my first pregnancy.

I had a headache with that lasted 2 months because I refused to take Tylenol. Finally my midwife saw the pain in my face and told me to stop being silly and take the medicine. I took the pill, my headache went away and my son was fine.

Another way to look at it is the infection is much worse for her baby then the antiobiotic is.  An untreated infection can cause all kinds of problems including miscarriage.  I believe the amoxicillan is one of the safer antiobiotics to take during pregnancy.

another way to think of it- amoxicillin is prescribed even to newborns. it is safe. for extra reassurance, tell her to ask the pharmacist when she picks it up. they often know more about meds than doctors.

I took it twice when I was pregnant with DD and when I was breast-feeding her....i also just finished a round of it with this pregnancy....it's one of the safest things aside from tylenol that you can take during pregnancy...it's been studied for YEARS and shown to have pretty much no ill effects :)

I took amox when I was pregnant and it didnt have any effect on my son so I think she should be fine! If she is concerned then I would have her call the OBGYN office and see what they say! God Bless

Thanks guys, I swear I think I get more info from you all than I do this ob clinic. We've only been there twice but I'm not that impressed, sad to say. However, it's what she has to go to with our military insurance unless I were to pull her out, changer her insurance and take her to a civilian doctor, which trust me, I've been tempted to do. I just hope the pregnancy goes well and that there are no complications. We have 6 more months!

i took amoxicillian with 2 of my pregnancies and like another poster said it is a lot safer to take the medicine than too let the infection get worse and that can endanger the baby and her. Also with the fever and tylenol, tylenol is consider the safest drug for pregnant women and if the fever goes over 101 or 102 than that can cause problems for the baby as well, good luck hope she gets better!!
