Anti-anxiety Medications and Pregnancy

I posted a similar question in the womens health forum but would appreciate the advice of you ladies too.

Does anyone know if there are any anti-anxiety drugs that are acceptable to take while pregnant?  Has anyone here had personal experience with this?

All (Most) of the anti-anxiety drugs are C class, which mean that it is not known that they cause any damage.  They have done animal tests and it has shown to casue some problems.  But the dose they give the animal is like 200times more then a human would ever take.  I take a class C med. for being bi-polor and not taking it would cause me more harm then good. If the benfits out way the risks, then take the med.  What med are you taking?

My doctor said she had a patient on Lexapro their whole pregnancy and she was fine.

I am not "currently" taking any medication but do suffer from an anxiety disorder.  I was on Paxil for about 5 months and stopped taking that last March as my husband and I wanted to start trying for a baby.  To cut a long story short, I got a job in another state (husband had to stay behind) so we put things on hold until my husband joins me this Spring.  The problem is my anxiety has returned recently and, even if I can deal with this without medication, I am concerned things will be compounded if I get pregnant..... the thought of not being able to take any medication if I "need" it while pregnant absolutely terrifies me but I also dont want to put an unborn baby at risk.
I will likely discuss this with my family doctor next week but its always useful to have input from others.  I currently live in a small town with only a few doctors and they seem to be very opinionated on certain matters - it would not suprise me if they would be highly vocal on this issue and not even look at the risk/benefit ratio.

My sister has been on Paxil for at least 12years and had 2 healthy children while taking it. I think you have to talk to you doctor about dosage.

good luck!

I was put on Compazine for severe morning sickness, which it is also known to help for panic/anxiety as well. It is a class C drug as well, but as the other posts said, the doctor will measure if the benefits outweigh the risks. Good luck!

I too took Lexopro with my son, and I am currently taking it with this preg. My dr. said that it was safe.

Please go to your dr. and be put on something.  It is way better for you to be on a med and be healthy mentally then not.  If you have anxiety that is bad for the baby.  I'm 15w4d and I take my med and doing fine so is baby.  Don't put yourself through the pain because anxiety sucks and I feel for you girl.  It is always best not to take anything, but if it is effecting you really bad then you got to go to the dr.

I'm going to have to ask my doc about this too.  My fertility doc said i couldn't even take a xanax while i was trying to concieve (conceive).  he also said that i would have to stop taking celexa at 4 months.  but if you are all doing well while continuing medication i will have to double check with my regular ob. too.
