Any vitamins/precautions to prevent autism/sensory disorders?

by kellym, Oct 22, 2007 09:00AM
It seems several people around me, neighbors, friend, sister-in-law and acquaintances that there are many cases of little boys that have these sensory disorders or cases of autism. Does anyone know of any vitamins/diet I need to be on to make sure that I am doing ALL  I can do for the mental health of my unborn baby? It seems to run 8/10 boys over girls and I am not going to find out the sex, (EEEK). I have a 1 year old dd and she seems perfectly fine. Thanks!

Hey!

I have heard that it may help to space out the MMR immunizations (like instead of every 3 months - maybe every 6 to 9 months)... Other than that - I got nothing - sorry!

Honestly, I don't think you can do anything to prevent it.  Just eat well and take care of yourself to give baby a great start.  Autism is becoming more prominent, but I don't think it's as high as you mentioned.  I just ready a medical study on it and they are saying 1 /150 boys will be diagnosed.  I have 2 healthy little boys and did nothing special.  My big sis did the same and her oldest child is autistic.  In her case I think she was even more careful becuase it was her first pregnancy.  Talk to your Dr. about your concerns, but I bet you and baby will be fine.

Hi girls, I'm sorry, I meant 8/10 ratio boys to girls. Not 8 out of 10 kids get it, hee, hee. It just seems a lot of people around me have problems. I see the mothers extremely frustrated and the kids that cannot communicate are just as frustrated. Thanks for your responses

Zevasmom, hope you had a nice flight out, It was nice meeting you!

Oh, I was wondering where you got your #'s.  I completely understand.  I was nervous too, but my boys both seem to be great talkers!  My sis tried to wait it out, but her son was not talking at all a 2 yrs. old.  Not much babble either.  He was also very behind on motor skills, but you could tell by the first year that he was different.  He is in special schooling and it has made a huge difference.  He's very bright, you just have to deal with him a little differently.  He's talking now and you can understand what he's saying too.  They didn't get the official diagnosis till he was 4, he's now 5.  They knew much earlier though that something was different and were seeking medical help from 2 & 1/2 yrs on.

1 in 150 kids....1 in 94 boys...The stats are talked about all the time on the news, talk shows, Autism speaks etc.
There is NO genetic testing.
I have been reading that if one or more of the parents has an autoimmune disorder that if the child gets certain vaccinations they are at greater risk for reaction...possible autism...its the DTaP.
The omeagas can make a huge differenc...just look up and see what kids who have Autism are given to help them. THe smae can be taken by the mother as a preventetive measure...The DHA certainly helps with brain dev. in any child.
We started giving my first son DHA when he was 19 months old and saw HUGE gains in his language. I took it all thru this pregnancy and now while I am nursing. Im sure you have seen in advertised in baby formula? But dont waste your $ on cheap stuff...Nordic Naturals is a good one.

Oh yeah, I took the prenatal w/DHA w/my dd. My neighbor is a nuerobiologist and her son has SEVERAL sensory disorders. She is one mamoth piece of knowledg although we never speak. She did say that the Omega 3 is HUGE and to take it during pregnancy & while nursing. Okay, well, just take the vitamins and hope for the best!

look into probiotics as well

by kellym, Oct 22, 2007 02:04PM
Okay tomel, I'll google it. I have never heard of it thanks!
Also, I just saw an Autism commercial. It said 1 of 23,000 kids will get into a serious car wreck. 1 of 166 will be diagnosed with Autism, (shocking)

Yeah thats the Autsim Speaks organization. Some executive of NBC or one of the major networks has a grandchild with Autism..so they started that.
They have something now thats new on their website (just saw this on the news) where there are videos of typical children along side autistic kids so a parent can watch and compare..so example video of typical kid reading a book..then an autistic kid reading a book..the typical kid will look at his parents face once and a while...the autistic kid doenst look up once.

Yeah alot of parents dont know anything about the supplements that can be given and taken...even to normal developing kids...our society is so brainwashed by the major food companies that feed ours kids with **** and drug companies...most parents have no clue...alot dont even know that these things (homeopathic stuff) can really help kids with delays and other disorders. Most peds. arent on board either. It takes alot of research and work to learn all this stuff. Jenny Macarthy is out taking it to the media now..hopefully people like her can help really educate.

Sorry, sort of skimmed through the posts so I'm not sure if I'm being repeatitious here but Jenny McCarthy advocates a gluten free and dairy free diet as well.

Yes...some even suggest that pregnant moms try to go by that...although thats hard

by Me2mommy2b, Oct 22, 2007 09:34PM
I have met with many mothers of autistic children (as I treated a lot of autistic children), most if not all of them report doing everything by the book during pregnancy.  Not trying to scare you but just saying that unfortunately there is nothing we can do to prevent it unless we know for sure what's causing it.  There are tons of "theories" and "guesses" but nothing 100% for sure.  Just take care of yourself.

by tomel, Oct 22, 2007 10:43PM
No your right there isnt really anything that can be done that is a for sure thing as a preventative measure...but then that all depends on what you believe in....there are alot of theories out there and alot of parents are starting to go with the not as popular ones. But I am not gona go there cause everyone has their opinion. Dont wanna start that debate

DHA is good alot of people dont take it during pregnancy and alot of us dont get our share of Omegas from food source. It helps with ALOT of things during and after pregnancy including mood post partum.
