Are fetal hiccups a sign of a problem, a healthy baby or nothing?

by specialteacher, Jul 05, 2007 12:00AM
I am 36W5D pregnant.  Over the past 2 weeks my little girl has started having hiccups at least once a day.  Hiccups used to be a rare occurance for her.  The hiccups don't last over 10 minutes and she doesn't seem to mind them, but I was wondering if it is normal for her to have them everyday.  I will ask the midwife on Monday, but thought I would get your opinions too.  Thanks!

My son had the hiccups about 4 times a day in the womb (he Still has the about 4 times a day lol) But I believe it was in what to expect while your expecting, I read that hiccups is a sign that everything is excellent.

My son had the hiccups everyday while in utero.  It is perfectly normal.  I would not be concerned whatsoever.  Just sounds like a healthy baby to me!

Actually hiccups are a really good sign, it means that the lungs are developed enough to hiccup! No worries! Best Wishes!

I agree with the other posters. Hiccups are a good thing. My youngest son had them all the time towards the last month of pregnancy.

Yep-good thing. My baby has them several times a day. It means they are healthy and doing what they're supposed to do!

No worries...  I read up on hiccups and they are unvoluntary spasms of the diaphragm; the sudden rush of air into the lungs.  It's the way our bodies dispose of un needed air naturally.

Everything is just fine....  Don't worry yourself.  We, humans, have hiccups all the time.  In fact, since I've been prego, I think I have had them more than the norm.

My first baby had them nonstop, to the point it actually hurt, she was perfect.

It's normal...I used to joke and say oh no here goes another 1oz and I ended up having a big baby girl!  But I wouldn't worry to much, it sounds like you are going to have a healthy baby.

that is funny, my little girl had them all the time. even when i was trying to sleep, and wake up with my belly jumping once every 2 sec. BUT i never had the hiccups when i was preg. it was like as soon as i found out i was pregnant they went away, but as soon as she was born, they came back bad. and she still has them at least twice a day.

Hi!  I remember vividly my son having hiccups at least once a day towards the end of my pregnancy.  At first I had no idea what they were and then one day I realized that I could almost hear it and obviously feel a little jump every two seconds or so.  I miss that feeling!!!  My son is four now and rarely has the hiccups, I, on the other hand, have them more than enough!!  I would say that you are lucky to experience them!! ;0) No Worries.
