Asthma and Pregnancy

by LisaDLK, Nov 30, 2006 12:00AM
Hello everyone!

I have a question regarding asthma and pregnancy.  I am currently 5 weeks pregnant and have had pretty bad asthma since I was 5 years old (I'm 30 years old now).  I've been on breathing medications my entire life.  Currently I'm taking Albuterol and Pulmicort (inhaled steroid) daily and Claritin as needed for severe allergies.  I have discussed my medical conditions several times with my ob-gyn and she has told me to stay on course with my treatment.  I realize that if I'm not breathing well then neither is my baby.

My question is this... are there any other mom's out there who took asthma medications througout their pregnancies?  Even though I will continue to take my medications as advised, I can't help but wonder how it will effect my unborn baby.

my mom had asthma when she was pregnant and she could take certain medication.  I know there is some that are unsafe during pregnancy but she could take her daily stuff.

Good Luck !

Hi.  I haven't had my baby yet so I'm afraid that I cant be of must use to you.  But I do use my albutorol inhaler as needed.  But that's all I'm on.  I had severe asthma as a kid but, as an adult, it's moderate.  I've asked this question several times and several times have been told that it is perfectly fine to use it.  They say the need out weights the risk.  I'm not sure about the other medication you take but, twice while I had a cold, had to use my nebulize and I was also told that it was ok.  If I needed it more than twice a week, she would prescribe something for me.  But I didnt.

Please let me know if you have anymore questions because, as of now, we're in the same boat.

i'm 25 wks, was taking qvar40 once a day up til about 20 weeks, then my asthma got a lot worse... switched to qvar80/4x a day to manage it. most of these drugs arent absorbed into the placenta so they're considered safe.

my son is 3mths old and i took pulmicort and albuterol and zyrtec the whole entire pregnancy.  It is more important for you to breath so the baby gets air.  My son is fine and my asthma wasnt too bad during pregnancy, thank god.  good luck.
