Augmentin while breastfeeding a baby with jaundice

Augmentin while breastfeeding a baby with jaundice

I had a little girl by Caesarian section 5 weeks ago. I have developed wound sepsis in the past 2 days & been put on Augmentin SR 2 tabs twice a day. My daughter has had jaundice since she was about 4 days old. I have been putting her in the sun when the weather allowed & the yellow colour has seemed to improve. I have tested her bilirubin by skin test twice: at 14 days it was 161 & at 23 days it was 194. Her colour has visibly improved since then, but she is still yellow. I have taken 3 doses of the Augmentin so far & she is very unsettled and seems to be more yellow today than yesterday. Should I stop breastfeeding? When should her jaundice clear up if it is not dangerous (she is feeding well and gaining weight, but she does seem to have colic)?

At this point in time, I would consider looking into a specialist to see whether or not there is a medical reason for the jaundice to persist this long. There is someone on these forums who breastfed and her baby's jaundice persisted. Unfortunately, it was due to a medical condition.
Who have you spoken to about this? Have you asked for a second opinion? If she is feeding well and gaining properly there may be another reason for this. I would not stop breastfeeding without the guidance of a professional.
Best of luck and please let us know what the outcome is.
Also, good luck with the colic. My second had colic and I am still a bit traumatized by the experience (and it ended a year ago!) Swaddling, white noise, bouncing helped a little.

by the way, I just asked my husband about augmentin since he is a pharmacist. He said the augmentin is safe for baby when breastfeeding, and would not aggravate jaundice, although it may cause looser stools.
