Babies & Allergies

DS has been coughing and sneezing recently in lieu of more humid conditions and the windows being open.  DH had terrible allergies as a kid and was very sick- how will I know if DS has the same problem?  Would this be allergies?  Would it slow his appetite, or could that be his teeth (he doesn't want to eat as much and chews on the nipple)?

Any advice would be ever so helpful!  Thanks!

My son is doing the same thing! I just posted on here if there was a way I could tell if it was a cold or allergies. My husband has severe allergies as well and has since he was a child. My son does the same thing with the bottle... he always chews on it. I hope you have better luck than we have. I am taking my son to the doctor next week. Hoping for good news! Good Luck!

Yah, DS will be going to the doctor next week as well.  I think his teeth are just giving him problems and that is why he is chewing, but I don't know about the coughing thing.  DH's allergies kind of got better the older he got, but I know he had a LOT of shots and troubles as a kid.  Good luck to you too!

How old is your baby? I can't remember who said it but I heard from someone that babies don't have allergies until they are like 2. I'm not sure if that is true or not but I thought I would just throw it out there. If anyone can find out if it is true that would be great! :)

Well, I called the pediatrician and they got me in here this afternoon.  He was having some wheezing I guess, so he thought that it might a virus in the lungs and / or the beginnings of asthma (which DH had terrible and still struggles with).  So, he prescribed some medicine and a nebulizer to be used 2 times a day for at least 5 days.  Bother.  Anyway, thanks for the posts!

Oh- I asked about the allergies things and the ped said that environmental factors can cause allergy symptoms (I mentioned how we had dust, cats and indoor mold), so I don't know about the 2 year thing... just wanted to let you know what I found out because I did ask  :)

Oh well thank you for asking for me! I'm totally going to research it now and see if they do... but I would think that if dust, cats and mold can cause allergy symptoms than that they do have allergies younger than 2!

Well, babies can have food allergies, that is why you should only do new foods 1 per week, so I don't see why they can't have environmental allergies.  The ped said it isn't common but it can happen, especially with a family history, as in our case  :)
