Baby Laundry Detergent

by CYW, Apr 14, 2008 06:11PM
I have a quick question on baby detergent. Ds is now 7 mos old and I have been using the Purex Baby Soft laundry detergent for his clothes..I am thinking of switching to the Purex hypoallergenic..It has no scent and no perfume etc...I pay 5.97 for a bottle of the baby soft for about 20-25 loads and for this kind it is also 5.97 but for 40 loads...I save money in the end.. I mean it not a BIG BIG deal but I just figured I could go ahead and do it? I also use Purex liquid laundry detergent for my clothes BUT I didn't want to use my detergent YET for his clothes..fearing it MAY be too strong??? I have since day 1 used a little bit of fabric softner..I use the Downy Ultra Tahitian Waterfall-to try..it is awesome!!! also in EVERY drawer in his dresser there is half a baby's own bar of soap wrapped in some paper towel so that it doesnt touch his skin...It also keeps his clothes smelling nice..and since it dries out his skin alot..what better way to use...But anyways what would your thoughts be? Could I change the laundry detergent?

definitely! we have never used baby detergent, especially since so many are now hypoallergenic, dye-free, and fragrance-free. we buy which ever "free" one is on sale that week. DH has very sensitive skin and has always done well with it. so has dd.

i don't use baby detergent either. i use the regular brands and get the dye and fregrance free. i also set the washer for an extra rinse cycle.

We didn't use baby detergent either and no problems.  We also just use the fragrance and dye free and neither of our kids had any problems.  I say go for it!!

I just wanted to thank you girls.  I am being very proactive (and impatient) about ttc this fall, and I had a question about the kind of detergent to use (and I have a little nephew and remember my sister washing all of his clothes).  We have a front loader washer and dryer, and in my trips to the store to pick up our usual detergent, I haven't been able to find any HE (high effeciency, detergent for front loaders) baby detergent.  I was glad to read that you can just use detergent that is fragrance and dye free.

I started out using All Free and Clear because I was concerned about washing my daughters clothes with fragranced laundry detergent.  My husband and I both had extremely sensitive skin as babies....so thats what I started with.  I accidentally washed one of my daughters favorite blankies in my own laundry (she had spit up on it when I was breast feeding and so I just tossed it in the laundry).  She didn't have any problems!  So...I now just use Gain Lavender Lilac Moment detergent and fabric softener.  I do the extra rinse cycle...and everything seems to be fine!  If you want to save money....try and wash an item in your own laundry and see what happens....if you don't have a problem then....then you can just start washing all of his clothes in it!  :)  Hope this helps!

if you are concerned with the strength being too much think of it this way, cut the dosage by half when cleaning his/her clothes and you will be fine, my family does it all the time with our newborns

I used Dreft for all of Avery's laundry until a few weeks ago. She seems to be fine with the regular laundry detergent (she is almost 1). My mom said she used Dreft for the first year with us.

Also, remember your baby is already in contact with your detergent--if you think about it whan holding them they rub their faces on your clothes...so just buy one dtergent and use it for eveyone's clothes...you will be fine with the free and clear stuff.

hahah you are NOT a horrible mommy lol.. I went with ivory snow and then switched with the purex baby soft since it was cheaper and smelled the same.. with ivory snow you got like a 15 load bottle for 10$..That is just ridiculous lol...

chances are if he was going to have a bad reaction you would have seen some sort of reaction already from him being on your clothes.  We use all free and clear that has no dyes or perfumes and AJ does just fine.  I have actually seen more reactions out of children using dreft than I have a regular dye free, perfume free detergant.  I would try it and see.

CYW- you know i dont think i have ever even seen baby detergent, i fly down that isle quickly at walmart because it always has 10 baskets and 500 people on it, and its at the end of the store, so i usually hae two crying babies by then too lol i think ill check next time just to see if its cheaper...because if it is cheaper then mine heck ill try it lol

watch ill buy it and my babies will have bad reactions to the non-reaction detergent lol that would be my luck
