Baby With Milk Allergy/Acid Reflux

Baby With Milk Allergy/Acid Reflux

Hi All!

I posted a few messages a few weeks ago about my daugher.  She was having a hard time of it with a lot of gas, belly pains, facial excema, and then diahrea.  We switched her to Nutramigen, and it's been such a wonderful change!  She's not in any pain anymore.  The last few weeks she's been spitting up a lot and we've noticed a lot of what seems like congestion, and she's always trying to clear her throught, and she would choke too.  We brought her back to the doctor, and it seems now that she has reflux too!  Reflux is apparntly hard to diagnose before 6-8 weeks, right when her symptoms seemed to get worse.  Now she's on baby Zantac, which I'm still waiting to see if it's working--they said to give it a week or so. She's been spitting up/throwing up more than she did before the medicine and still has the throat issues, but she hasn't "choked" at all.  (I posted earlier today about letting her "cry it out", this is another reason I'm reluctant--she spits up a lot & if she cries I'm afraid she'll throw up and then I have to pick her up anyway to change her!).  Has anyone had any experience with these issues?

All those symptoms you listed still sound like food allergy symptoms to me. My son has severe and moderate food allergies and if he gets even a minute touch of egg (moderate allergy)in his food his lungs gets congested and says his throat feels hot. He gets full blown anaphylaxis with the tiniest amount of milk. We have to be very careful about what we feed him. Will your insurance allow you to take your baby to an allergy specialist? They can run a RAST test which is a blood test to confirm the allergies your baby does/doesn't have to food. It's been a number of years since my son was diagnosed but I understand how you're feeling. Good luck with everything.

My son is also on Neutramagin and Zantac for Acid Reflex/GERD. Was your son premature at all? I guess it does happen alot in preemies..my son was 4 weeks old. Anyway he could not keep his formula down. Just as much as he would take and as fast as he would drink it it would come back up. He was loosing weight and really fussy and also really congested. They switched him to Neutramagin and then they done an upperGI on him to make sure it wasn't a hole in his stomach. I guess it even showed on the test that it was acid reflex or something. At first my ped. told me to put 1 tablespoon of rice ceral in every ounce of formula. He cried and cried with a belly ache, so they had me stop that and come in the next day. They put him on Zantac. He still threw up. So then they told me to give him the Zantac and put 1 tsp. to every 2 ounces in his bottle. They said he may spit up but as long as he gained weight it was okay. They also said he would outgrow it by a year old. He is now 6 mnths and I have taken him off of the Zantac. He still does it here and there but not to often. The rice ceral really helped him to keep the formula down.
I also found hun that he seemed to throw up more right after I gave him the Zantac. So I would time it and wait to give him a dose untill like an hr to an hr and half and that would usually help. Good luck hun.

Please go down and read my post from Friday.  It is about acid reflux.  Hopefully it will help you a lot.  I can say, unfortunately, that a medicine like Zantac will NOT help with spit up.  It WILL make the spit up non-acidic (which is the part that makes babies so fussy)...but the spit up will be around until the baby outgrows it.  :)

Good luck and I know EXACTLY what you're going through!!!

Also, check ebay for Nutrimigen coupons since it is really expensive as far as formulas go!

My daughter was not premature, she was about 41 weeks.  The Zantac hasn't seemed to really do anything yet, except possibly make it harder for her to get to sleep!  Has anyone had this problem?  The dr said this could happen.  We've always had to rock her to sleep, but since then it's taken about 1 1/2 hours each night to get her finally to sleep for the night!  (See my earlier post a few down from this.)  We're not sure if the sleep thing is related to the Zantac or not, but it started around the same time.  (Before, it would take on average about 1/2 hour or so to get her down, but it's much longer now...)  She's still spitting up, actually more now than a week ago, and she still has a bit, but not as much, of the "congestion" sound in her throat and the trying to clear her throat sound.  It's only been about 6 days, so they said it would take about a week to really take effect.
