Baby has thrush

by Merma, Nov 27, 2007 01:08AM
My daughter was just diagnosed with thrush.  My Dr. said it would probably take 2 weeks to get rid of and I have to brush her tongue with a toothbrush and medicine, boil nipples and binkies.  Anybody dealt with this?  Any insight, tips?  Should I be on an antibiotic, too, since I'm also nursing?

Also, could this be part of her stomach upset/throwing up?

2 of my children  as babies had thrush in their mouth,  I was prescribed medication to put in their mouths but was also presribed medication to put on my breasts as thrush is highly cantagious(SP)    with my first child I got thrush on my nipples and it was soooooooooo sore but I didnt realise what it was,  I live in the UK and was prescribed canasten which I had to put on after feedind and wash it off before the next feed,  I dont think there is any connection to your little one have a stomach upset,  hope she gets better soon

You don't need an antibiotic, as thrush is a fungal infection, not bacterial. Watch for signs of thrush on your nipples. It's very possible you have it if she does too. If you do, you can get a prescription for yourself. Some people make their own concoctions for it, but i wouldn't be comfortable doing that.

Gentian Violet for thrush for nipples & babies mouth..

My 2nd DD had thrush and her pedi prescribed Gentian Violet.  It's just a purple ink herbal that you skirt you in their mouth.  IT's kinda sad cause it turns their whole mouth purple! lol  And yes, you have to boil their paci and nipples after every use. I think it took a little over a week to completely get rid of the stuff.  It is a Fungal Infection.

Hello, my 2 month old just finished a round of antibotics for his thrush (it is called nistatin) an oral medication. I caught his thrush early when he was trying to eat he would scream and i saw a  white codeing on the left side of the roof of his mouth, thankfully my 8yr old has this when he was a baby so I knew what I was looking for! Dont worry I boil all my bottles and nipples and he STILL got it! Take care I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon!

Do you think if I use really hot water and then put in microwave for 2 minutes on high it's close enough to boiling?

The most important thing is not to take an antibiotic!

What you need is an ANTIFUNGAL...an antibiotic will make things much worse.  Nystatin is safe to use...I would also fortify both your diets with some probiotics.
