Baby rolling to tummy at night!

Baby rolling to tummy at night!

Help! Last night was a nightmare! Yesterday, my baby finally learned how to roll over from her back to her tummy all by herself. She was doing it all day. Unfortunately, she was doing it all night and everytime she rolled over to her tummy, she'd wake up and start screaming. Her little legs would get stuck in the bars and her head was in the corner....I was up with her at 12 am, 3:30 am, 5:20 am, and 6:18 am because she kept rolling onto her tummy and crying!! HELP!!!!! I don't want to let her cry it out on her tummy because I don't think she knows how to turn her head to her side and I'm still scared of SIDS. I think she might have been waking up because she was constipated (lots of pebbly poop yesterday) and then she would just roll over because it was something fun to do and then she'd get stuck. What should I do???

She's slept through the night for 3 months now and now she's waking up and rolls to her tummy.

I'm not too sure I'll be much help, but once your baby rolls over there's not much you can do.
I totally understand that you are worried about SIDS b/c she is crying when she gets stuck...
Do you still have the bumpers up?

Hi there.  I'm going thru the exact same thing with my twins right now.  They flip over and it wakes them up--all night long!!   We're in a cold climate, so they wear sleep sacks at night, which makes it hard for them to roll back.  I'm nervous about SIDS too, in particular with my little ones who were preemies and are delayed in their motor skills.

To give me some piece of mind, we use the 'breathable' bumpers, which keep the arms and legs from getting caught (most of the time), but are mesh so not a suffocation hazard.  I always check on them, though, if they cry, and I usually flip them back over.  A few times, I've found them on their bellies, sleeping soundly, and I'll leave them in that case.  Wish I had some better advice, but I think you have to just hang in there through these less sleep filled nights.  It'll probably only be a month or two before she will flip around without any struggle.  Good luck!

how old is your little one?  my son is 4 months and hasn't even tried to roll over yet :(  but in all fairness no one sits him down long enough to see if he could....

I am going through this with Ashtyn and have been for a while now, He is 7 months old, and yesterday he woke up with a burn on his forehead where he was rubbing his head on his sheets, while trying to roll back to his back. His ped offered no suggestions either.

You can find breathable/mesh bumpers at www.onestepahead.com. These are safe. Other bumpers could suffocate your little one. They're fine to sleep on their tummies once they learn to roll over. Binkies also help reduce the risk of SIDs.

You can get the angelcare movement sensor monitor to help you sleep at night.  God Forbid your baby stop breathing during the night the monitor will go off.  It is by far the best baby gadget I have.  It only costs $99.00 at babies r us and works great.  You know it workds because if you take your baby out of the crib and forget it is on the alarm will sound because it does not detect movement.

On another note my daughter's legs keep getting stuck too.  But they say bumpers are no good I dont understand?  I go by the book for everything so of course I do not use them.  Thank you so much JoyRenee I am looking into the breathable ones you just mentioned.

My son use to get his legs stuck too-- and when stuck, I mean STUCK!  It would take both my dh and me to remove them, as one of us would pull the slats apart and the other push his thigh back through.  I posted on here too a few months ago and got lots of recommendations for the breathable bumpers... I was skeptical, as I'd always heard "no bumpers" for safety, but we got a set at Babies-R-Us, and let me just say, they work GREAT!    We've had no more stuck limbs, and because they crush down if stepped on, he can't use them to climb out of the crib.  I've found him sound asleep with his face pressed right up in to them, and he can breathe just fine.
The only downside to the breathable bumper set we got is that it is made in 2 pieces-- one big piece for the back and sides, and a seperate smaller piece for the front (so that the front rail can drop on the crib).  This leaves a gap at the two front corners (you can't attach both pieces to the same rail slat, so there ends up being 1 slat space between the two pieces) that potentially he *could* still get his leg through, although in the 4 months we've now had them up, he's never done it.  If he had, we were planning on somehow modifiying or sewing the 2 pieces together to make one big bumper-- but then we wouldn't be able to drop the front of the crib if needed.
Anyway, good luck!!!  Like everyone else said, once baby starts rolling, there's no going back.  My son LOVED sleeping on his tummy, and once he learned how to roll, no matter how many times I'd flip him to his back, he'd roll right over.  (One plus though, he seemed to sleep better/longer once he was able to sleep on his tummy... I don't blame him, I hate sleeping on my back too! :))

Thanks everyone....  Last night was pretty much the same thing....  I might look into breathable bumpers......  The thing is, she just buries her fact into the mattress and doesn't turn her head to the side!   So I can't get a breathable mattress!  :(  I think we'll just try to stick it out.  It's so frustrating though......

Oh, forgot to say my little girl will be 6 months next week....she was also a preemie....I also put her in a sleep sack, hoping that would keep her from rolling over, but it didn't!  LOL  I think it did help keep her arms and legs from going through the cracks.

My gosh your story sounds EXACTLY like what's happening with our 9 month baby boy. He was also a preemie (born 15 weeks early) and is a week shy of being 6 months adjusted. The last couple of nights he wakes at 2am, 4am, 5am etc. because he just can't seem to figure out how to:
1) fall asleep on his tummy  or   2) roll back onto his back to sleep.
I'm noticing from other viewers that there just isn't a whole lot that can be done except going to him when he "squacks" to be rolled back onto his back...and I'm sure in time he'll figure it out on his own...sooner than later I hope!!! LOL :^)
