Bad Nasal Congestion While Pregnant

by Niki73, Oct 18, 2004 12:00AM
I know flu symptoms have been going around and I am so parnoid about taking any type of medication just because of my history with miscarriages and now that I am 26 weeks along I don't want to do anything to harm my baby. But I called the on call midwive this weekend because my cold had gotten so bad and I was afraid that wasn't good for the baby. So I asked if I could take non medicated Saline Drops and she said yes as much as I wanted too and I could use sudafed if needed but not to exceed 48 hours. Well I didn't feel comfortable taking the sudefed so I didn't but I used the Saline drops and it really helped. I also used my daughters vaporizer one night hoping it would help but when I went to the store I noticed on the label it said not to use when pregnant....I just wanted to see what any of you have heard about the Saline Drops, Sudafed or Vaporizer when pregnant. When we have a bad cold does the baby get sick too??? I've always wondered that? Thanks, Niki

Try a humidifier instead of a vaporizer. Also drink lots of water to keep the musous thin so it secretes more easily.

My sinuses have been very stuffy, especially at night.  I read that it is completly normal.  The book, What to Expect When Expecting, also says that occasional nose bleeds are also normal.  Fortunatly I have not experienced that.

If you are really suffering and your doc/midwife says sudafed is ok, it really is ok to take as she directs.  This is a rather commonly used medication during pregnancy.  Be careful if you have a tendency towards high BP, and as she said, don't use for over 48 hours.

Saline nasal drops have no medication in them, so there is zero risk of anything bad happening with them.

Thanks for your responces! I am feeling better today I didn't think I was going to make it through the weekend...My husband got it first then my daughter and lucky me I got it last and I'm hoping I don't start the vicious circle over again!
