Being a Diabetic...

I'm a diabetic... I had a miscarrage (miscarriage) about a year ago... could I still have children?  Is this hindering me to have children?

I HAVE HEARD THAT BEING A DIABETIC SHOULD NOT HINDER YOU FROM HAVING CHILDREN. I AM DIABETIC ALSO. WHAT TYPE DO YOU HAVE? I HAVE TYPE 1. WELL I HAD A M/C 5/22 AND I AM NOW PG AGAIN JUST FOUND OUT LAST WEEK. I HAVE BEEN PRAYING THAT I GIVE BIRTH TO A HEALTHY BABY. DO YOU KNOW OF THE WHAT GOALS DOCTORS WOULD LIKE DIABETICS TO KEEP (AS FAR AS BLOOD SUGAR) DURING PREGNANCY?

I take insulin and pills... I had a miscarrage (miscarriage) also back in 2001 in July, so it's been a good 2 years.  I know when I got PG, my GYN wanted me to have a blood sugar of 115 or lower... in order to have the baby, but then I started to bleed very bad.  Now, I am ready to have another baby, but have been unsuccesful... Hopefully God will give my husband and I a child... that would be my lottery!!!  Just to have a child from the man I love.

FYI- I HAVE BEEN TOLD MY SEVERAL DOCTORS THAT IF YOU PLAN ON TRYING TO GET PG GET OFF PILLS. THEY CAN BE HARMFUL TO YOUR BABY AND I HAVE HEARD THAT SOME OF THEM MAY MAKE GETTING PG HARDER. MY SUGARS HAVE BEEN A LITTLE HIGH AT TIMES LAST NIGHT 167 THE OTHER DAY 175 BUT FOR THE MOST PART THEY ARE AT NORMAL LEVELS. DO YOU THINK THIS MAY BE HARMFUL, EVEN IF THEY GET HIGH VERY SELDOM. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT GOD WILL BLESS YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND WITH A HEALTHY BABY, JUST KEEP PRAYING AND BELIEVING.

I dont know if this will be of any help to either of you but I have a good friend who is a diabetic. When she got pregnant her doctor put her as high risk and everytime she had a prenatal appt she always had to schedule an appt with a specialist who kept track of her sugar. Hers would vary also. Sometimes as low as 47 and as high as 170. She actually had a rough time and still delivered a perfect healthy baby boy in June 2002. As for the pills I agree with bird81. Please get off of them. Good luck!!!

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT. THIS GIVES ME HOPE KNOWING THAT YOUR FRIEND GAVE BIRTH TO A HEALTHY BABY!!! THAT IS MY BIGGEST CONCERN RIGHT NOW

by Cholera, Jul 22, 2003 12:00AM
I don't know... I'm really very nervous...  I have a friend that lives in Fort Worth, Texas.. that she had a healthy baby and her blood sugars were very high...  I hope I can have children.  My blood sugars are not very low... last time I checked them my lowest was 195 and sometimes I go up to 300.  I'm in deep trouble when it comes to children aren't I?

by bird81, Jul 23, 2003 12:00AM
I WOULDN'T SAY YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE BUT YOU DO WANT TO HAVE YOUR SUGARS UNDER CONTROL BEFORE YOU CONCEIVE. WHY ARE YOUR SUGARS SO HIGH? WHAT DID YOUR DOCTOR SAY ABOUT THIS? HOW MUCH INSULIN DO YOU GIVE YOURSELF A DAY? I GIVE MYSELF 24UNITS A.M. AND 20 UNITS P.M. I WENT TO THE DOCTOR YESTERDAY MY FIRST VISIT,SINCE I AM HIGH RISK. HE TOLD ME TO TRY AND KEEP MY SUGARS AROUND 100 OR LESS. HE ALSO SAID THAT IF THEY OCCASIONALLY GOT HIGHER 150 THAT MAY BE OKAY BUT HE REALLY DID NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. WHEN THE BABY IS DEVELOPING YOU REALLY DON'T WANT ALOT OF SUGAR IN YOUR BLOOD. I AM ON 4WKS LMP SO THIS IS A CRUCIAL TIME FOR DEVELOPING BABY. WRITE BACK. WHATEVER SUPPORT YOU NEED I AM HERE TO GIVE IT TO YOU. I KNOW HOW HARD THIS IS.

Thanks for your concern... I checked my sugar this morning and it was 110...I was so happy.  I'm injecting 30 units of the pen (75/25) in the am... and at night I'm injecting 60 units of Lantus.  I stayed home today from work bcuz I wasn't feeling so good... that's what motivated me to check my sugar.

I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! DOESN'T IT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD WHEN YOUR GLUCOSE READING IS GOOD? IT MAKES ME FEEL VERY GOOD ABOUT MYSELF AND THAT I CAN DEAL WITH THE DIABETES.

HELLO CHOLERA I ALSO AM A DIABETIC. MY HUSBAND AND I DONT HAVE ANY CHILDREN YET "STILL TRYING" BUT I HAVE DONE SOME HOME WORK AHEAD OF TIME. I CERTAINLY DONT THINK THAT HENDERS YOU FROM HAVING ANY MORE CHILDREN(SORRY ABOUT YOUR FIRST LOSS) I HOPE THAT YOU MAINTAIN A STRICT BUT HEATHY DIET AND EXCERSISE NORMALY
AND KEEP ALL OF YOU DR.APPOINTMENTS. I ALSO HAVE SEEN AND HEARD THAT DIABETICS HAVE MORE THAT THE AVARAGE SIZE BABY A FEW RELITIVES OF MINE 10PD BABY IM LIKE "OH MY LORD" NOT VAGANALY OF COURSE. YOU ALSO HAVE TO KEEP YOU SUGAR AT A CERTAIN LEVEL I KNOW WHEN YOU DO GET PREG. RISEING TO HIGH IS VERY DANGEROUS FOR YOU ANN YOUR BABY AND ALS DROPPING DOWN TO LOW. WELL GOOD LUCK
AND I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK.
