Birth Canal too long?

Birth Canal too long?

My son is now 4 years old whith a language delay and speech delay. He is about the developmental stage of a 2-21/2 year old. I nursed him untill he was 2 and I work full time at night when my husband sleeps, so the only interaction he had as a baby was with me when I was home. My husband was good to him but didnt really talk to him at all and I got him anything he wanted before he had to say anything at all.

Durring birth he was in the birth canal for 2 hrs. His heart rate went way down but there was no documented complications. He was totaly normal as a child and still is to a degree. He has to "think" about things. What Im saying is he says, "ummm." and looks around to find the words he is trying to say. He doesnt understand every days words I speak to him everyday, and I have to say it over and over again for him to sometimes get it. Im worried that there is something I can do more to help him. He is in speech therapy but its not working as fast as I would like.

Im wondring if the language delay is the combo of these factors? Could he have been in the birthing canal too long?
How long is too long in the birth canal?

Also there is some lanuage and speech problems on my side. My little sister had an English accent we had no clue where it came form as she had grown up in CA all her life never even steping foot on England's soil. ;)
And I had a hard time speaking and finding words but it was never as bad as this is.

As long as he was still connected to his umbilical cord, he would have had appropriate oxygen in his bloodstream.  (And obviously he was connected to it or he wouldn't have made it.)  So if you are concerned about hypoxia or something, it doesn't sound like it.  I don't know the answer if what you are concerned about is compression of the brain, but the birth canal is a pretty stretchy place and the skull plates protect the brain, so it doesn't sound too likely.  (I would discuss this with a doctor, though, which I am certainly not.)  Have you checked his hearing?  If his hearing is fine and his only problem is language delay, please do know it's pretty common, especially with boys.  I'm glad he's seeing a speech therapist, and it might just be that sometimes these things take time.  I wish I had more helpful answers for you.
