Birthmarks??

Birthmarks??

Do any of you or your babies have birthmarks??  If so, how big and when did they (or you) get them??  Did they fade or get darker with time?
My 10 month old dd has a big one on her thigh and it wraps around her leg (light tan color with jagged edges).  It appeared between 3-4 months.  It looks like another one may be forming on her rump.  I am hoping it is nothing to worry about (the doctor said not to worry) but it still bothers me...(not for cosmetic reasons, just worried that it isn't normal).  Neither myself nor my husband have any.

These are known as cafe-a-lait spots and are not of any concern unless a baby/child develops more than 3-4, usually before the age of 5.

Just for precautionary reasons, I would bring it up to the pedi on your next visit.

My daughter also has one on her butt, exactly where the panty line will run (line will cut it in half). Not very big though.

I have a strawberry mark, from my shoulder blade down to my wrist and across my chest.  It was there from the day I was born.  As a matter of fact, 30 years ago the Dr. wouldn't even bring me to see my mother until I was completely wrapped up.  She didn't know for 3 days!

Your daughter's birthmarks are cafe au laits. Like wannabenana pointed out, they're not a cause for concern unless she starts developing more than 3-4.
My son has a cafe au lait mark on his stomach. It's about six inches long by 3 inches wide. It appeared when he was a week or two old, and he's four years old now. He loves it, and so do I. :-)
He tells me, "God spilled coffee on my tummy when He was making me in heaven!" Lol, he came up with that all on his own.
I have a couple of cafe au lait birthmarks as well. One is on my outer left leg, from the top of my thigh by the hip all the way down to the ankle, but it is only visable if I get a tan. Ha, my legs haven't tanned since I was about 10 years old. I have another very small one on my inner thigh on the same leg, which is darker, but it's so small (about the size of a dime) that no one ever sees it.

My son has a stork bite birth mark on his forehead, eyelids and the back of his neck, he is almost 2 and they still haven't gone away. They have faded but still are very visible.
They are nothing to worry about.

Anyone else??
Thanks for all your input ladies.  I really hope this is nothing but I can't help but worry about her.  She seems totally fine though in every other aspect at this point.  The cafe au lait on her left thigh wraps around from her knee around to the back of her thigh and it sort of looks like two marks.  Then on her left butt cheek there is a small one and a bigger one that are both very light but I can tell they might get darker with time.  I know some diseases are associated with these and it is freaking me out.  At her 6 and 9 month check the doctor said not to worry unless more start showing up.  I am a worry wart though so I will just worry about it now until she is like 30!!

Try not to make her self-conscious about it. It won't bother her if you don't make a big deal about it. But it will bother her if you draw attention to it. She'll get her cues from you.

My sister had the stork bite on the back of her neck and forehead. It was more visible as an infant but you can't really see it anymore. Same thing with her oldest son. Now that he's an adult you really can't see it anymore.

My daughter had a small birthmark in the middle of her back that looked like tiny red pinpricks clustered in a circle of sorts. I at first worried about it because it was more noticeable as an infant. You can't even see it anymore.

Besides, once they're up and running, if they're anything like my tomboy girl, lol, they will have many spills, scrapes, broken bones and scars. My daughter had to have stitches in her chin from falling on concrete when she was four. You can only see a thin white line now when she lifts her chin.

I've heard of kids who had missing limbs, etc., who were the most self-assured, confident kids because their parents didn't treat them any differently. I think that's always the wisest way to go.

I use to be a worry wart, too! (still am).

If your concern is with neurofibromatosis, a simple blood test will give you your answer. This particular disease is inherited by the parents 50% of the time and the other 50% is caused by a spontaneous mutation.

My DD has a birthmark- a strawberry one- on her forehead. It appeared about 6 weeks after she was born and has continued to get larger- it is now protruding out of her head. I understand the worry- I was and am sometimes concerned not only with the cosmetic thing but also that it could be a sign of something else but I believe with the type of birthmark my daughter has that it will fade over time and it is not a sign anything else is wrong. I was told girl's get more birth marks than boys, especially fair skinned girls. I am looking forward to the day it fades, though!

My son had a birthmark on the underside of his scrotum when he was born, in the shape of a Nike Swoosh (I am so not kidding)----the doc was so surprised and amused by it that instead of saying the proverbial "it's a boy", he said "HA!  Well, would ya look at that!!"

He's 7 now, and though I haven't looked lately, I think it faded when he was about 2.  Just keep an eye on her, and perhaps take her to a pediatric dermatologist if you aren't satisfied with your regular pediatrician's level of attention to the matter---they are trained to handle the norm, and birthmarks and related diseases aren't something he sees a lot, so if it makes you feel better, take her to someone who specializes in such things.  I'd say it's worth it if it gives you a better sense of control---relieving the worry will benefit you both!

The neurofibromatosis I believe is characterized by these birthmarks in the armpit or groin area. It's really rare and I would think twice about genetic testing because of a baby birthmark. The other symptoms are online. My sister had an optic nerve tumor and my son had central vision loss which is why we even know about it (he doesn't have it btw). Usually you have to have a family history to get a genetic test of that type (or to get it paid for I should say).

That said, for your inventory, DS has a small dark mole-like birthmark above his groin; DD has a cafe au lait about dime-sized on back of leg (it's gotten a tiny bit darker across 18 mos.) and itsy bitsy stork bites on back of neck and tailbone (that have faded). Other DS has nothing; neither do I.
